I have weak closing strength and pain in my hands which makes it hard to impossible to use the conventional rotating or moving blade type of peeler. This type is called a French peeler or fixed blade peeler and it works great by transferring the motion from thumb and fingers to the wrist and lower arm. Yes, it does take a little getting used to but once you master your own technique it's actually much faster and certainly less painful to use.

I was tired of sealing and resealing the bag and reaching under my sink for the bag. Now, I keep it on my counter and just flip the lid and remove the tablets and snap it close. I have no doubt it would be great for food storage, also. Love it!

(More customer reviews)We had an older, plastic OXO salad spinner for many years and it worked great and was built with a very durable spinner mechanism. We "upgraded" to this version when we dropped our old one and cracked the bowl. Unfortunately we have had the same experience as several other reviewers here - the spinner mechanism broke after only a few uses. It seems that if the inner basket has any significant amount of weight (from wet greens) in it and you press firmly on the spinner mechanism there is some plastic part that snaps inside the mechanism (at least that is how it sounded when it happened).
To OXO's great credit, however, their customer service has been fantastic so far in getting us setup for a refund (not a replacement - we would just break it again I'm sure).

Oxo Good Grips PRO Grater Review

(More customer reviews)I used this grater last night for the first time with some pasta and was amazed at the quantity of cheese it produced in just a couple of strokes. I've always found something to dislike about cheese graters, such as cleaning them or the way you have to hold them when grating, but so far I can't find any faults with this design.
The grater has a surprising amount of heft that's concentrated in the handle. The grating surface does not feel flimsy, although I did notice some deflection if you press hard enough on it. The amount of deflection seems reasonable and normal. The grater is very rigid. The grating surface is separate from the handle, but it's held in place by several small tabs on the reverse side -- it's not going anywhere. The reverse side of the grating surface is clean and doesn't provide any place for grated cheese to get stuck. The handle's material is the same type of rubber found on other OXO products, and I found the diameter of the handle to fit my hand perfectly.
The grating surface consists of what look like little tubes that run parallel to the handle. This has two benefits. The first is that you grate on both the downstroke and the upstroke. It's really amazing how much quicker I can grate now and how much cheese comes out. The second benefit is that it's really easy to clean this grater: just wipe across the grating surface (i.e.: across, not up and down). No grated sponge!
The end of the grater is rubber for traction when resting the end of the grater on a plate, but I had no problem with just holding the grater over the plate. The cheese fell in a predictable pattern -- over my pasta and not all over the table, even with some vigorous grating.
Yes, this is an expensive grater. But if you're like me and appreciate well-made, quality tools, this is one you should add to your kitchen. It does one job, does it well, and is easy to clean up afterwards. That last part is key, because I hate cleaning up. With this grater I can just rinse it off, hang it up, and forget about it until next time.

Oxo Good Grips Smooth Potato Masher Review

(More customer reviews)Finally I can make mashed potatoes without using my mixer. I am a quadriplegic/tetraplegic (C5-6 for thos who care) and I can use this tool. Traditional potato mashers just require more grip than I have in my hand. Plus the horizontal handle makes the pushing easier, as well.
My mother with mild arthritis likes this as well as her traditional masher.
As with most Oxo tools it is highly ergonomic: it fits the hand and does the job it's supposed to.

Oxo Good Grips Wooden Reamer Review

Of course, you could try using electric juicers, but they can be a pain to wash after your done (like any juicer). I strongly prefer this method over all that I have used.

OXO Good Grips Citrus Squeezer Review

(More customer reviews)I've used a large variety of tools over the years to juice citrus, and I was excited when I learned of this tool. Not only is it by Oxo, a leader in kitchen gadget innovations, but Cooks Illustrated also rated it as the top method for juicing limes.
I'm happy to report it does indeed juice limes very well! People without a lot of forearm/wrist strength may have to brace the bottom handle of the squeezer on something, and all the juice doesn't drain out of the squeezer until you remove the spent half-lime (it could use a few more drain holes), but it's effortless for me and I don't get juice all over my hands like when I use a reamer. For a lime squeezer, I give it 5 stars.
For a lemon squeezer, it leaves something to be desired. Working with an average supermarket lemon, it doesn't squeeze out as much juice as a reamer would (leaving some still in the lemon, wasted), and worse, squeezing hard causes lemon juice to squirt out the side for a sticky mess to clean up. Still, it is easy to use, if not very effective, so for a lemon squeezer, it gets 3 stars.
Since this is marketed as a citrus squeezer and not a lime squeezer, I averaged my two ratings to award 4 stars. If you're going to use this tool for limes and only the occasional lemon, the Oxo Citrus Squeezer is an excellent buy.

Oxo Good Grips Hand-Held Mandoline Slicer Review

(More customer reviews)Well, I'm shocked that there are ANY positive reviews for this gadget. If ANYBODY is the "gadget queen" in the kitchen, it's me. I own and have used the Boerner V-slicer for at least 15 years and love it, but sometimes when you just have a small, quick job to do, I thought this might qualify - so I went and bought one. I think it's terrible! First of all, the finger protector is almost unusable. The points on the underside meant to grab and hold onto the food are so shallow that they don't want to penetrate the piece of vegetable or fruit or maintain its grip on it more than one swipe across the cutter. So, I resorted to just holding the apple quarters, in this case, with my hand with plans to just not slice the last little chunk of each piece when I was getting too close to the blade. The adjusting of the cutting thickness is already a big pain as the little control/slider wants to stick at each junction, making it difficult to change the thicknesses. When sliding the apple in the downward motion, it made perfect and uniform slices. But, when you are sliding it back up (the hand motion is usually rapidly sliding the pieces of food down and then back up across the blade) - well, the food tends to sort of get caught in the returning motion on the far end of the blade. There's a little ridge or separation bet. the blade and the support so it catches the food on the upward motion, frequently "yanking" it out of your hand. This causes the food to drop away and creates a potentially dangerous environment as your hand is normally moving back & forth fast so that you could end up slicing your fingers on the way back down again across the blade before you even realize that the food fell away from your hand. Is that understandable?? Sorry, it's just dangerous and because of it's poor design, it encourages people to not use the finger protector which is an accident waiting to happen. I'm returning mine.

Oxo Good Grips Lemon Zester Review

(More customer reviews)I am a quadriplegic/tetraplegic (C5-6 for any of you who care). I have only about 1/3 use of my hands and about 1/2 use of my arms, but I can use this zester--not with great ease, but I can use it! I cannot use any other zester I have tried.
My mother has mild arthritis and she likes my Oxo tools better than her own (even the ones she's grown to love over the years).
The zesting blades are sharp and at the perfect angle. You get perfect zest with little effort. And you get NO pith (bitter white part).
As with almost all Oxo tools the design is excellent: it is highly ergonomic--it fits the hand and works the way it should.

(More customer reviews)Oxo products are routinely superior, and the new strawberry huller is no exception. My family often goes through strawberries in bulk, so for us this tool is long overdue.
Many people have a lazy way of preparing strawberries that never tastes right - i.e., they just rip the stem off quickly, or at best they'll make a quick cut at the white part. But my mother's way tastes far better - make a circular incision into each 'berry, making sure the white is mostly gone, leaving only the flavorful part. Up until now, all the hullers in stores have been cheap, flimsy, and awkward - kind of a joke. But OXO finally figured out how to make a one-size-fits-all contraption for the strawberry that works perfectly every time (except when the 'berry is exceptionally small). One quick, unskilled swipe (push in, turn, pull the tool out sideways), and you can move on. For most sizes, you can even get the hull out without the extra step of pulling the leaves off (just rinse them afterward to loosen any that got stuck).
So this makes the job quick and easy, helping you get to the best of the fruit in the best way, with significantly less effort.
Another thing to consider - it also eliminates the danger of slicing into your fingers from holding a knife in an awkward position. So... if you prepare a lot of strawberries, or aren't very skilled at hulling, or have arthritis, or have kids who want to help out, then this is a good investment.

The problem with the old one is that you'd have a fine splatter of cherry juice nearby and eventually your hand would hurt. Oxo has solved both issues! The splatter guard is wonderful and the grip really does cushion your hand. Bonus -- dishwasher safe and locks for storage! It also works on olives.
Kudos to the Oxo team for making some solid product impovements! I'm passing my old Pampered Chef one down the family line.
