(More customer reviews)I really think Hoffritz is missing the boat by not selling this slicer in an infomercial. This is one kitchen gadget that really works. One feature that sets it apart is the stainless steel bowl that the slicer portion sits on. It is high quality and nearly worth the price of the slicer by itself. The rubber feet on the bottom of the bowl are effective in their designed use to prevent the bowl from wandering on the countertop as one uses the slicer on top of it. A feature that the Amazon description did not mention is the rack which holds all the blades, protecting both one's fingers and the blades. I get perfectly uniform slices of carrots and zuchini and potatoes with ease and the food holder even rides on a pair of rails on top so it can not slip off. A surprising aspect of using this slicer is that it actually makes food go further because once you see the pile of slices you can get from , for example, just one carrot , you may decide you don't want to use two. If you do slice more than you need which is easy to do because it is almost fun, the handy plastic cover snaps onto the bowl and will protect the contents well in the fridge. Hoffritz has been reknowned for fine quality blades for many years and the slicer is blessed with durable and sharp ones. Most of all this thing just oozes quality and is very satisfying and efficient to use. Factor in the time savings and how easy it is to clean , just a quick rinse usually does it although the whole thing is diswasher safe and you have great addition to any kitchen.

(More customer reviews)I have been using this product for a few years now. It is a very simple kitchen tool that does the job well enough in many situations. It julianne slices ginger, cucumber, carrot, and a lot of other things, especially for those that are used in bulk quantity or only for flavor. For example, when I make ginger-infused dry vermouth, I can use less ginger and still extract ginger flavor fully and quickly by julienne slicing ginger. If I'm slicing ginger by hand, I'd not bother julienne slicing and use more sliced ginger and infuse a bit longer. But this thing is handy in a situation like this. (Julienne sliced ginger is easy to remove by straining.)
For salad and garnish, I would still slice them by hand. The cut surfaces do not look as pretty compared to the results I can get easily using a very sharp vegetable knife (which is generally true for a lot of cutting tools of this type). The advantage of this tool is speed and simplicity. Again, I would not use this thing to make garnish, unless I'm cooking for a large party. But then a better option is a professional quality mandoline with a proper blade.
Among a few other good options for julienne slicing, I still rate it 4 stars because it is simple, easy to use, quick to wash and store away. Professional grade mandoline would require more work to set up and clean up. Hand cutting would require clean cutting board space. This tool requires not much more than two hands to work with.

Even if by some miracle you can get it to work, you will end up mangling more than half of the piece of vegetable you are trying to process. It was a total waste of my money. Garlic Slicer Review

(More customer reviews)It slices just about any fruit or vegetable with exceptional ease. It will also slice your fingertips with ease if you're not careful with it. The ceramic blade is insanely sharp - the reason it works so well - and holds its edge for a very long time. The only downside is the handle. Holding it with the handle while slicing doesn't work very well for me. The best technique I've found is to place the slicer flat on a cutting board with the handle hanging off the edge, holding the handle with one hand and running whatever I'm cutting over the blade (WITH the holder once your fingers start getting close) with the other.
An excellent kitchen utensil, but one that requires some extra respect and caution during use. It seems to be a bit more durable than the adjustable version, and I like being able to slice with a "back-and-forth" motion - it makes quick work of whatever I'm preparing.
One thing that's not often noted is that food sliced with a ceramic blade doesn't seem to oxidize (react with air) as quickly as food sliced with a metal knife. It's very noticeable with things like apples. Very strange, but in a good way.
We now have quite a few Kyocera Ceramic knives and utensils and we're very happy with all of them.

I have a really nice cheese slicer that is branded Hamilton-Beach (which is no longer available) and when the wire broke I wasn't sure how to fix it. I got this result after Googling "replacement cheese wire". The photo looked like the end of my slicer so I decided to take a chance and they fit perfectly. Cheftools gave me really fast service and they had a nice selection, I also bought some other gadgets that I couldn't find in my local housewares stores.

(More customer reviews)When I say "one thing", I do not mean to slander this device as a unitasker. It will not julienne -- but I don't julienne anyways. It won't cut spiral slices from an onion, if you're cooking your way through Michel Richard's book -- but you can get a much better device for that strange task. Instead, Kyocera made a nearly idiot-proof slicer that Does What It's Supposed To. This is about 99% glorious and 1% terrifying. Read on.
It slices paper-thin (I believe the measurement is 2mm?) planes of whatever you run across it, and it does so very, very quickly. The biggest drawback of this device is also its biggest strength -- before you know what happened, your garlic clove or pear or potato is sitting in a pile on your cutting board, neatly reduced to loose-leaf, and if you are not careful, you will have to hunt around for the bit of fingertip that got lopped off by the exceptionally sharp blade. It slices anything you put in its path, which is exactly what it's supposed to do -- so don't slice your fingers!
The designers were not joking when they emblazoned the device, the package, and all the marketing materials with warnings about how sharp the blade is You might think the hand-guard would ameliorate this hazard, but you'd be wrong, except for boundary cases with big thick vegetables. And you'll find yourself using this for so many smaller or wigglier vegetables that you will eventually dispense with that thing, so Watch Out. It's SHARP.
I find the hand-guard / smoosher to be almost useless unless you have a big, wide vegetable with a vast expanse of firm flatness to poke it into. Mostly I end up using my fingers and paying as much attention as I can to avoiding the maw of the slicer. It *WILL* cut bits of your fingers clean off, and it's so sharp that if you have calluses as thick as mine (from climbing and lifting weights), you may think you've escaped without incident. Don't be so sure. Look for the telltale flat pink bit on the end of your fingers and FISH THAT OUT OF THE SALAD, you savage! Not that I would ever find myself in such a situation, oh no. But, uh, I've read...
In any event, this device looks like junk and works like a charm. I paid $10 for mine and I use it constantly. It Just Works. You should try it.

I have used mine for almost 1 year and have no major complaints, the only one being that Kyocera could have designed the guard to snap in place covering the blade for storage. I keep mine in the plastic "dome" that it was packaged in. It is definitely VERY SHARP, so use the guard. It will effortlessly slice any vegetable: onions, cucumbers, potatoes, carrots, etc.. Easy to use, no assembly, etc. Highly recommended.

MIU France Brushed Stainless Steel tomato Slicer Review

One of the cutting strips broke on first use and some of the others started to bend after a few uses. It is not a solid, strong slicer. The price did not justify returning it but I am not using it anymore and will look for a different tomato slicer.

This is a great little item. It allows you to easily prepare meals without a lot of time or fuss. It is simple to use, puts together effortlessly and cleans up in a snap. All pieces that actually touch food are dishwasher safe on top rack. It comes with 3 GladWare 6 cup bowls with lids, so you can move from one item to the next without having to clean up each time. There is also a permanent bowl(no lid) to use as well. The shredder/slicer disc attaches easily and is two sided so you just use the side you want as the top side.Place your food in the chute, and use the "food pusher" to gently guide it through. Voila!

Mechanically, it has been sound. I have had no problems, it has worked great. I have found it to be a super-convienent kitchen tool. A quick-start is included to get you set up and going, and there is also a nice recipe book with many ideas for family meals, one dish meals, salads and sides, deserts and entertaining. Among them you will find pizza, vegetable stir fry, cheesy potatoes,chocolate pear torte and Salsa(there are lots more). The recipes have all indgrediants listed, cooking directions and even tell you which side of the shred/slice disc to use.You'll also find some neat little hints, like for shredding mozzarella cheese, it should be frozen and cut into little cubes for best results. The booklet and has cleaning instructions and customer service numbers. All the info(including recipes is also in French and Spanish, along with specific phone numbers)

So here is my only little complaint and reason for 4 instead of 5 stars. There is a second disc which is a "Fine Shred/Crinkle Cut", to add a little something different to your meals. This must be purchased separately from Hamilton Beach. I think for the price, they could have included it in this package. There is also a disc storage that is not included either. I searched Amazon and could not find that Fine Shred disc here.See product features on detail page here, this model comes with 1 disc!
Other then that I love this nifty little item, and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.

I cut up 66 quarts of kraut in no time at all. The box on the grater is great for protecting your fingers!!!!!! There is no pressure on your hand/wrist/shoulder, it is so smooth. I would recommend this item to anyone making kraut. I bought this on Amazon . com through Superior Kitchen Gadgets. I will definitely buy from them again.

Super Benriner Slicer (Large, 5"x13") Review

(More customer reviews)Compared to some of the other plastic, lower cost mandolins the Super Benriner feels much sturdier than most and delivers in all the necessary areas. The blades are sharp and decent quality, the size is perfect for most general kitchen uses and the four blades give the average cook all that they will need. Along with some basic steps in care, such as washing and drying the unit and blades right after use, the Benriner should last it's price.
This unit does not have those "handy" legs like some of the others and I feel that makes it sturdier but it also means you don't have that convenience (I prefer sturdy over convenient). There aren't any "no skid" pads on the bottom edges so you need to create your own sturdy blocking (I run mine up against a large wooden cutting block which works fine but this is one improvement I would like to see on the unit). The slot for the 3 changeable blades is easy enough to figure out but one really needs to tighten the two "holder" screws tight or the blade will slide out while cutting (not a safe thing to happen on a mandolin). The method (two screws) for setting the cutting height is a bit cumbersome but I think this is another place where sturdiness wins over convenience in a lower-end device.
So, the only two things I'd like to see changed on this unit are the addition of some "no-skid" rubber edges and a more effective and easier way to secure the interchangeable blades.
Overall, a good lower-end, starter mandolin.

Bron Original Stainless Steel Mandolin Slicer Review

(More customer reviews)I have used many different slicers (V-type, diagonal) and this stainless steel Bron which I also own is my favorite by far. The Borner V slicer I own does not have legs and is thus unstable, it is okay for quick non-uniform shredding and slicing. This model has it's own legs so your two hands can focus on the cutting. If you simply pay attention to where the blades are (put the cell phone down), you shouldn't cut yourself. It has a sliding guard for the food to rest in which attaches to the mandoline (which in the picture of the item is shown attached upside-down) and I believe to be safer than the free floating guards of the others. One plus of the steel construction is absolutely true uniform slices which are produced, which has not been experienced with plastic slicers. If you have the money, it is a great investment that should last you your lifetime.

(More customer reviews)Well, I'm shocked that there are ANY positive reviews for this gadget. If ANYBODY is the "gadget queen" in the kitchen, it's me. I own and have used the Boerner V-slicer for at least 15 years and love it, but sometimes when you just have a small, quick job to do, I thought this might qualify - so I went and bought one. I think it's terrible! First of all, the finger protector is almost unusable. The points on the underside meant to grab and hold onto the food are so shallow that they don't want to penetrate the piece of vegetable or fruit or maintain its grip on it more than one swipe across the cutter. So, I resorted to just holding the apple quarters, in this case, with my hand with plans to just not slice the last little chunk of each piece when I was getting too close to the blade. The adjusting of the cutting thickness is already a big pain as the little control/slider wants to stick at each junction, making it difficult to change the thicknesses. When sliding the apple in the downward motion, it made perfect and uniform slices. But, when you are sliding it back up (the hand motion is usually rapidly sliding the pieces of food down and then back up across the blade) - well, the food tends to sort of get caught in the returning motion on the far end of the blade. There's a little ridge or separation bet. the blade and the support so it catches the food on the upward motion, frequently "yanking" it out of your hand. This causes the food to drop away and creates a potentially dangerous environment as your hand is normally moving back & forth fast so that you could end up slicing your fingers on the way back down again across the blade before you even realize that the food fell away from your hand. Is that understandable?? Sorry, it's just dangerous and because of it's poor design, it encourages people to not use the finger protector which is an accident waiting to happen. I'm returning mine.
