(More customer reviews)I've had this wonderful little peeler for at least a couple decades. I can't recall where I got it and it has no brand imprinted on it. It still works fine and is still very sharp. The problem is that it has become somewhat rusty and badly stained and looks bad with the other tools in the kitchen drawer. So, my wife and I were visiting our local Ace Hardware and noticed this Ekco Peeler. It was bright, shiny and new and we were delighted to find another to replace our aging peeler.
Our old peeler is almost identical to the new Ekco model, except in a few details. I'd say they probably came out of the same factory except that the old one has "Made in the USA" stamped on it. I threw away the new package, but I suspect it would have "Made in China" on it.
Well, fortunately, we didn't toss the old peeler. It's far superior to the new one. It's far sharper and will peel potatoes, carrots and what not all far faster and with less effort. Go figure. This new one is a little piece of junk compared with our old rusted and badly stained peeler. If we ever throw one away, it will be this Ekco model.

(More customer reviews)Cooking is my hobby and I spend a lot of time on careful prep work. I have weak closing strength and pain in my hands which makes it hard to impossible to use the conventional rotating or moving blade type of peeler. This type is called a French peeler or fixed blade peeler and it works great by transferring the motion from thumb and fingers to the wrist and lower arm. Yes, it does take a little getting used to but once you master your own technique it's actually much faster and certainly less painful to use.

(More customer reviews)I treated myself to this vegetable peeler after having used the old, metal kind for years. I've purchased other Zyliss kitchen tools in the past and they do make excellent quality items. Check out their ice cream scoop.
I first used this over the holidays when peeling potatoes for a large group dinner. It was very sharp, had good balance, and was comfortable in my hand. It seemed to take a slightly thicker slice than my old peeler, but was not excessive, and, in my mind, the job being much faster and requiring less effort was a fair trade off. It has the metal "eye" removing tip which is very sharp and works slick. There is also a plastic blade protector on it when new that doesn't stay on well. I'm not sure if it's meant to but it would be nice as it would be easy to slice your finger while searching through the drawer without it being in place.
I highly recommend this vegetable peeler, and Zyliss kitchen tools, if you're looking for an upgrade to your existing ones.

(More customer reviews)I certainly agree with the reviewer who said this peeler performed awesomely on peaches. (It also works nicely on nectarines and other soft fruit.) It also comes with a hard plastic blade guard that protects the blade when it's tossed in a drawer. Like others, I purchased this item for the wrong reason (in order to qualify for the extra $25 off an order of $125 or more), but I am certainly glad I did.
5/11/06: This peeler also does a fine job on ripe tomatoes (for those who do not wish to peel using the traditional scalding method).
11/04/06: I have purchased several for 'stocking stuffers'. You might consider doing the same.

(More customer reviews)This is the best peeler ever. It's small enough it fits in your hand easily, and that makes it very easy to peel things very quickly. If you hand wash and dry it, you'll have no problems with rust.
I use mine to peel 100+ apples a week, and have been for at least six months, and it still easily peels more delicate things, such as very ripe peaches, but then it will also peel much more difficult things like cheese pumpkins. No joke. this thing can take your toughest squashes, or your ripest peaches with no problem.

I have one that I always turn to when I want to do the job well, but I yearned for another sharper one. Well, this Christmas, I got my wish in the form of this set of Rada knives from my SIL. They are sharp and cut through potatoes with great ease.
I have only used them one time so far, but I am impressed. I washed both of them by hand, and hand dried them, putting them back in the original box. I'm not a fan of the handles, because I'm sure they won't stay as pretty as they are right now, but I'm hopeful that the blades will retain their original sharpness by keeping them in the box, and never putting them in the dishwasher.
I have bought countless paring knives over the years, and this one is the best I have ever used.

I've had one for years that finally gave out after I slammed the gadget drawer on it (you know, that draw filled with odds and ends). Anyway - wanted to give this little guy a good rating based on price point as well as how well it works for people with arthritis. The open handle makes it very easy to put your fingers through and pull vs the post handle grip types. Worth the shipping cost (which is 3x the item cost ;)

I prefer the Rotato because the wiring tends to get misplaced in my gadget loving household. Here's the deal... if you (and/or your family) loves potatoes (fried, diced, mashed... you get the idea), then you really must have a terrific potato peeler. And quite frankly, there is none finer. The hand cranked variety of the Rotato will last you through thousands of potatoes; and you will look like a whiz kid. This is a great thing to give for xmas-- a sort of generic xmas present that will be loved long after this xmas is over. Also, it comes with extra blades (because they do wear out) that you can locate in its base. I bought an extra set (at a very reasonable price) because I have broken a few of the blades along the way.

(More customer reviews)But usable. It's different in the fact that it's very small and as an American I am pretty much accustomed to the peelers that are turned to the side. This one zips right down the vegetable so you better be really careful with the edges of your palms. It's smaller than it appears and it's plastic, kind've hard to get a good grip on it but like I said, it's different. Doesn't mean it's bad. Hopefully it will last a while. :)

Starfrit 93013 Pro-Apple Peeler with bonus core slicer Review

(More customer reviews)This is a really good apple peeler. The blade is wider than in standard peelers (the red ones where you put the apple sideways) so it peels the apple faster. It peels around the top and bottom of the apple, missing only the parts right above and below the core, so after coring the apple there's no skin left--no touch-ups required. It comes with a corer, a corer/slicer, two extra blades, and little plastic covers for the blade and prongs. It's easy to clean.
The cons: It looks like it belongs in a toy chest, so if you pride yourself on your beautiful Martha Stewart kitchen you're going to want to put this away after using it rather than leave it displayed. It doesn't work well at all on potatoes--even when you cut them in half first, it still misses lots of spots and carves them into apple shapes. There are four plastic suction cups on its base to keep it from moving while you're using it, and you have to wet them to make them work. It only takes a few drops of water, though, and then they work fine.
I love mine and use it all the time. For me, the cons are outweighed by the usefulness of being able to peel, core, and slice an apple in seven seconds. I'll never go back to a sideways peeler.

(More customer reviews)I agree with the previous poster. I had my original Kuhn peeler for over 10 years. Despite it rusting in a few spots, the blade remained extremely sharp. The only reason I had to buy another was because this past Thanksgiving, I had relatives over and someone accidentally threw mine away while they were helping cleaning up the kitchen. I didn't notice it was gone until days later when I couldn't find it and the garbage man had already gone by.
I decided to give this one a try and found that although the blade appears to be sharp to the touch, it didnot peel like the original peeler. I had to make several passes over the same areas to peel and even then it didn't peel as well as I have liked. I haven't tried it on carrots or kiwis but definately don't plan on using once I get my new "original" style peeler I'll be ordering here instead. I'd like to order the stainless steel one but I'm reluctant now.
