Strawberry Metal Cookie Cutter Review

Strawberry Metal Cookie Cutter

I bought this cookie cutter thinking it would be big enough to make cookies on a stick. I was very disappointed at the small size of the cutter. Normally I would use one cookie per skewer but because the cookies are so small I would have to use at least three cookies per stick to make it look decent. This product in my opinion is only worth 99 cents.

Italian Summer Squash Seeds - Trombetta di Albenga Review

Italian Summer Squash Seeds - Trombetta di Albenga

I received the seeds for this Italian heirloom zucchini from Fernley, Nevada by USPS on 09/27/10, four days after I ordered them (09/23/10). These little darlin's were sent out the day AFTER I ordered them. Cudos to Renee Shepherd (AND USPS)! Now regarding the order: the packaging states that there are 25 seeds per packet, but by golly, there were 26 in there! (Now, I've had every kind of shipping oops and heartbreak you can think of since the onset of on-line shopping, but that extra little seed put a grin on my face. I can live with that!) They were nice healthy looking seeds, too...not those little, flat, useless ones. Here's to seeing how well they grow...
This was the perfect transaction and order. :-)

This tool makes slicing mushrooms either in small or large quantity easy and consistant. Mushrooms need to be firm and not too large for the tool to work well. I enjoy using it.

Norpro Grip-EZ Melon Cutter Review

Norpro Grip-EZ Melon Cutter
Average Reviews:

In order for this slicer to work effectively, you have to cut off the ends of the fruit (provides safe and secure bottom that won't slip, and the slicer can sink into the level top of the fruit), then initially rock the slicer back and forth, and then push straight down. Voila! Nicely cored, even slices. Can do bloomin' onions if you don't push the slicer all the way down.

Take all the work out of preparing cantaloupes, honeydews and pineapples. The cutter removes the core and makes 12 even slices in one motion, much quicker and safer than using a knife.

Oxo Good Grips Strawberry Huller Review

Oxo Good Grips Strawberry Huller
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Oxo products are routinely superior, and the new strawberry huller is no exception. My family often goes through strawberries in bulk, so for us this tool is long overdue.
Many people have a lazy way of preparing strawberries that never tastes right - i.e., they just rip the stem off quickly, or at best they'll make a quick cut at the white part. But my mother's way tastes far better - make a circular incision into each 'berry, making sure the white is mostly gone, leaving only the flavorful part. Up until now, all the hullers in stores have been cheap, flimsy, and awkward - kind of a joke. But OXO finally figured out how to make a one-size-fits-all contraption for the strawberry that works perfectly every time (except when the 'berry is exceptionally small). One quick, unskilled swipe (push in, turn, pull the tool out sideways), and you can move on. For most sizes, you can even get the hull out without the extra step of pulling the leaves off (just rinse them afterward to loosen any that got stuck).
So this makes the job quick and easy, helping you get to the best of the fruit in the best way, with significantly less effort.
Another thing to consider - it also eliminates the danger of slicing into your fingers from holding a knife in an awkward position. So... if you prepare a lot of strawberries, or aren't very skilled at hulling, or have arthritis, or have kids who want to help out, then this is a good investment.

Some cooks refuse to house single-purpose kitchen gadgets, but the Oxo Good Grips strawberry huller makes an excellent argument for bending this rule. Designed to gently but precisely pierce, grip, and remove the leafy hulls of strawberries, the tool simplifies prep work while leaving more berry behind to eat. Use is simple and efficient, thanks to pierce-and-scoop design and a finger-push release plunger. Like the rest of Oxo's Good Grips line, the little tool has a non-slip hold and chunky body so hands stand relaxed, and it cleans up in the dishwasher. For comparable specialty tools, check out the Good Grips mango splitter and corn stripper.

Chef'n BeanSlice Green Bean Slicer Review

Chef'n BeanSlice Green Bean Slicer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is really attractive, but it doesn't work at all. I had a pound of green beans, fresh, in the fridge on the day it arrived. I tried to french about 4 or 5 beans in it, and the beans just bent on the way into the device. They weren't stiff enough, or the blades weren't sharp enough, to catch the bean. I even tried cutting the tips off the beans, to give a cut surface to the ends, but that didn't work either.
So, I thought it might be useful for some other stiffer vegetable. Tried it with peeled celery. It worked okay on that, but you have to preslice the celery to green bean thickness, which seems silly. If I'm going to do all that, I'll just slice the celery. Finally, I tried it on a carrot, and actually pushed one of the blades out of the device.
After that, it went into the trash. That was a $6 lesson for me.
If you want a good green bean frencher, the "Krisk Bean Stringer and Slicer" or "Norpro French Bean Slicer" is the way to go. It's not as attractive, but it does the job easily. (Note: NOT the crank operated Norpro French Bean Slicer for $17, that one just mangles the beans. Get the little white one that you pull the bean through, for $6. It works, and it has a spring loaded holder that automatically adjusts for the thickness of the bean.)
