(More customer reviews)The unit was easy to assemble. It is a bit on the noisy side, as other reviewers have mentioned. Also, it is sometimes hard to get stable on a slightly slanted yard. If you are serious about doing leaf shredding, then you'll want to set the machine on top of a tarp and move it around the tarp as the piles of shredded leaves mound up under the machine.
The biggest downfall is how fragile it is: This is a leaf shredder only. It cannot handle even the smallest twig or branch without jamming or breaking the shredding devices inside. This was a big problem for me since its very difficult to 'screen' out every little branch before loading rake-fulls of leaves into the hopper. I got tired of having to constantly shut it down, unclog it due to some unshredded twig, restarting it, and then re-loading all the unshredded leaves, trying to screen out any twigs on the way.
Because of this I have since stopped using it.

(More customer reviews)I have had my electric Eco-shredder/chipper/mulcher for about one year. I use it for my vegetable garden waste, Fall leaves, and small branches from my trees and shrubs. The key to this product running well is to keep the items small (1"), feed the machine very slowly, and take care not to put wet debis into the hopper. This machine will clog easily, so it requires patients to let the debis clear before adding more.
Finally, the blades must be sharpend at the end of each days use. It takes some time to disassemble, sharpen, and reassemble. The Eco-shredder is a little electrically run machine that will do what it is advertized to do...don't expect more.

This is a great little item. It allows you to easily prepare meals without a lot of time or fuss. It is simple to use, puts together effortlessly and cleans up in a snap. All pieces that actually touch food are dishwasher safe on top rack. It comes with 3 GladWare 6 cup bowls with lids, so you can move from one item to the next without having to clean up each time. There is also a permanent bowl(no lid) to use as well. The shredder/slicer disc attaches easily and is two sided so you just use the side you want as the top side.Place your food in the chute, and use the "food pusher" to gently guide it through. Voila!

Mechanically, it has been sound. I have had no problems, it has worked great. I have found it to be a super-convienent kitchen tool. A quick-start is included to get you set up and going, and there is also a nice recipe book with many ideas for family meals, one dish meals, salads and sides, deserts and entertaining. Among them you will find pizza, vegetable stir fry, cheesy potatoes,chocolate pear torte and Salsa(there are lots more). The recipes have all indgrediants listed, cooking directions and even tell you which side of the shred/slice disc to use.You'll also find some neat little hints, like for shredding mozzarella cheese, it should be frozen and cut into little cubes for best results. The booklet and has cleaning instructions and customer service numbers. All the info(including recipes is also in French and Spanish, along with specific phone numbers)

So here is my only little complaint and reason for 4 instead of 5 stars. There is a second disc which is a "Fine Shred/Crinkle Cut", to add a little something different to your meals. This must be purchased separately from Hamilton Beach. I think for the price, they could have included it in this package. There is also a disc storage that is not included either. I searched Amazon and could not find that Fine Shred disc here.See product features on detail page here, this model comes with 1 disc!
Other then that I love this nifty little item, and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.

(More customer reviews)Each fall for the past 10 years I make about 75 to 90 pounds of of saurakraut. I worry that my simple old two-knife shredder will wear out so I purchased this item as a backup. Firstly, the "current" model Weston Shredder does not have the plastic or laminate base shown. It has a thin, non-laminated, non-plastic wood base that will warp with usage. The blades are unevenly spaced and non-adjustable. The blades are held in place with hand-hewed chips of wood wedged and glued into place. I think there is more chance of this slicer self destructing that there is of my old model wearing out.

(More customer reviews)I have used many differnt brands and styles of mandolines and this is by far my favorite. I use it most often for making scalloped potatoes (until I got this one, my husband called them bloody scalloped potatoes) and it is just great. I like the fact that the blade isn't exposed until you pull on the handle and I like that the blades are fixed (less chance of cuts). I generally just use the thinnest settings, but it does have a little button you slide to change the settings for thicker slices. It is also nice to be able to see through the mandoline to what you are slicing into the bowl ( the runway area is see through). I did notice if you slice onto a plate rather than a bowl, the vegetables can get stuck in the slicer as the veggies build up. Less chance of this when using a deeper bowl.

(More customer reviews)I tried using this to chop up onions, green peppers and garlic with this for sofrito. All I can say is that I ended up running to Wally World for a food processor. The food kept getting jammed up and much of it wouldn't even chop and got wedged in between the metal chopping cone and the plastic casing. I also had to use the larger shredder size because the smaller one didn't do much of anything. It might just be the veggies I was chopping but it kind of defeats the purpose if there are certain things I can't chop with it. While it's nice to have versatile attachments for such a great machine, this one is not one of the better ones. Hopefully it will perform better on other veggies or cheeses.

(More customer reviews)We laughed and laughed when we received this "as seen on TV" slicing and, well, grating "miracle product" as a gift. Who would actually use such a crazy thing? Well, it turns out that we would, frequently. It may not dice, but it does slice beautifully - thin and uniform, as well as grating everything from cheese to potatoes to carrots to ... you name it. We use it almost daily. If you're a vegetable eater or a cheese lover, you won't know how you lived without it. Easy to assemble and disassemble, and it's dishwasher safe, although you do have to position the parts correctly to maximize water flow and cleaning. You can do a fine or a coarse grate, a straight or a wavy slice. You can even get an ice shaver for making snow cones. It does have some limitations. While it grates all kinds of cheeses (softer cheeses work best when chilled), it can't slice cheese at all. Nor does it slice onions, celery or other "stringy" vegetables well. It will grate them, though. It slices cucumbers, carrots, summer squash and similar vegetables beautifully, but the chute is too narrow to slice most cukes or zukes whole -- you'll have to split them lengthwise.

The safety grip shown in the illustration does NOT come with the shredder and must be purchased separately. Nor is there any other finger grip. The shredder does NOT have non-slip feet. I was not happy about these discrepancies. It does cut a nice julienne. I kept it, but it is dangerous to use without some sort of hand grip. So I ended up paying an extra $7 for the hand grip. Not happy, not pleased with this brand, and will replace this product as soon as Kuhn Rikon comes out with something comparable.

(More customer reviews)This thing rocks for shredding cheese! My family doesn't like the pre-shredded stuff, and loves to just grab handfuls of freshly shredded cheddar cheese to munch on. However, normally shredding cheese involved grating your knuckles in the process, and a lot of arm muscle. Enter, the Salad Shooter!
I purchased my Salad Shooter last November. I buy 2 lb bricks of Tillamook cheese, and cut them into 5 pieces so they'll fit into the chute. This is the most time consuming part of shredding cheese for me now, and it doesn't take that long! Then, I shred the cut sections of cheese. Yes, the Salad Shooter is loud, but it only takes me seconds to shred 2 pounds of cheese. So, I don't mind the noise.
Clean up is easy. A quick rinse to get the bigger bits of stuck cheese off (not sure if this is even necessary, but I do it anyway), and then everything goes in the dishwasher, except for the motor bit, and that only rarely needs a quick wipe with a paper towel. I love it.
I've probably shredded about 30 pounds of cheese with my Salad Shooter, and it's still going strong. For every family gathering, I volunteer to bring the shredded cheese.... it's just so much easier for me to do it.
*Update: October 6, 2008* I've probably shredded well over 60 lbs of cheese now with my Salad Shooter, and it still looks brand new. Since I wash everything in the dishwasher, I kept expecting rust spots to show up on the metal grating part, but there's no rust to be found. I'm very pleased!
**2nd update: July 2010** Still going strong.... I don't even want to guess how many pounds of cheese I've shredded with this Salad Shooter! :) Shredding blade cone had a hairline crack in the plastic part of it for several months but I kept using it, and now there's a bigger crack near it. Ordered a replacement cone directly from Presto this month, arrived in 4 days. I have a habit of pushing hard on the cheddar cheese in the chute, so I think that put a lot of stress on the shredding cone. 2 and a half years for that first shredding cone isn't bad, though, seeing what I put it through!
