Cuisinart Food Chopper, Black Review

This is the worst piece I own by Cuisinart. I generally like their products but this thing stinks. My girlfriend bought me this for X-Mas (after I picked it out!). Let me say that I would give it negative stars if possible. I now have to waste time and fuel to drive it back to the store to recuperate the cost. The thing fell apart after 1/8 of an onion--which is, btw, all the space this thing has to chop. Was not sharp enough to cut through the tougher, outer onion layer. P-l-e-a-s-e! I took it all the way apart to see what could possibly "jam" a manual food chopper. I noticed that the blade piece unscrewed from the hand piece. No problem, right? Wrong, wrong! The pieces would not stay together. Needless to say that it almost ruined X-Mas once my girlfriend had to go digging through the trash for the receipt . . .

I purchased this rice cooker over the comparable model by RIVAL...what a mistake!!! This thing only worked once and didnt do a good job the first time! I hate that we waited a full month before using it a second time because now we can't return it. The thing simply stopped heating and the indicator lights would not work. Please do not buy this thing. Very poor quality, if I had it to do over again I would purchase the RIVAL.

This rice cooker is one of the crappiest I've seen. As the previous review states, rice always sticks to the bottom and turns yellow. On top of that, It sprays watery goo everywhere through the vent in the cover. Even after following the directions to a T (and making some adjustments of my own to try to fix the issue), I still end up with a sticky counter. I ended up just going back to a regular pot again. Definitely a waste of money.

Rival RC101 10-Cup Rice Cooker with Steaming Basket Review

Rival RC101 10-Cup Rice Cooker with Steaming Basket
Average Reviews:

We've used several brands of rice cookers, all claiming to be good. One caught on fire after two months, another lasted only a year before it simply stopped working all together.
When we spotted the Rival cooker at a local store, we bought it based on the name. I've used Rival crockpots since my college days, and have never had a problem with them.
This cooker does the job, and does it well. We've had ours for just over two years, and the non-stick bowl has only now started to show wear. We mainly cook brown rice, with only the occasional white rice meal.
We like the larger capacity bowl. Though we could get along with a smaller bowl, this one allows us to add things in or various recipes, and the warming option keeps the meal nicely warmed.
We plan to replace our current rice cooker with the exact same model.
**My only issue with the 10-cup cooker has been the smaller bowl. If you're like me and sometimes add other ingredients that need to be stirred in, the smaller bowl makes that difficult. That was my own error in judgment.
A tip for those who have a problem with starch spewing onto counter tops; rinsing the rice helps alleviate this issue. Simply place the rice in a strainer and run cold water through it (or rinse it in the rice bowl). It's more of an issue with white rice than brown.

I've been wanting to get some reusable bags for some time now, so, being the nit-picky shopper that I am, I didn't just settle for the most popular bags; I tried to find the best deal, not just on Amazon, but across the internet. These seemed like the very best deal I could find. There was only one review at the time for them, but they were cheap enough that I decided to take the plunge.
I've been using them since August now, and LOVE them! They all seem to be hand sewn, and are very, very sturdy. They are made of a thin, but strong plastic-type cloth material. The picture for them isn't the best, as it makes them look very very thin, weak, and like they are made of pantyhose. In reality, the holes are larger and they're thicker. You may be wondering if that adds any extra weight: it does. In fact I measured them, and a typical plastic produce bag, and found that they weigh a few grams more, but at the very most, all that is going to add in price is 1 cent, but probably not even that much.
Unlike some reviewers, I didn't have ANY trouble at all with the cashier seeing into the bags. They are colorful, but very easy to see through. My only problem is that I sometimes forget to bring these bags into the store, but I can tell you: there is no WAY I'm going back to plain old plastic bags!
IMPORTANT NOTE: They also DO work very well for leafy veggies: just make sure you but those greens in the fridge as soon as you can (which you would probably do anyways if they were in a plastic bag). Some greens, such as herbs, will go bad in the fridge faster if they're exposed. In those cases, you probably shouldn't leave them in these bags for long. But they are perfectly adequate for storing those kinds of greens until you get home, or even for several days, until you get them in another container. In the case of herbs, for me, I will bring them home in these, then put them into a plastic container in the fridge. No problem.
They come in three colors, and three different sizes: the smallest is only big enough for a few cloves of garlic, medium could fit citrus or tomatoes, and large could fit about any other produce. The large is a bit smaller than the average plastic produce bag, which isn't a problem at all, but if I would have any advice for the seller, it would be that you could possibly offer some even bigger sizes, or offer some white bags, for people who don't want colored ones. These are just really quite petty concerns when it comes down to it though, as the bags preform much better than I'd ever hoped.
For the people who have concerns about using your own bags, and how that may make it harder for you, and for the cashier: have no fear. It's actually easier to have these in your cart at hand than to have to go looking for the nearest bag dispenser. So you may actually be saving time. As I said, my only problem is that I sometimes forget them. They are compact enough that you could easily put some in a purse, pocket, handbag, in your other reusable bags, etc. If you are getting a really, really large vegetable, then you may have to use another bag, but basically all fruits and veggies I've tried have fit. For the cashiers, some may have to press the bag against the produce to see the number, but that's about as "troublesome" as it gets. At most, it'll only take them a few seconds more. You may have people asking you where you got your bags though, in which case, it will take more time. ;)
Even if it does take a tiny bit longer, it's well worth it.
I think the only reason flip and tumble 5-Pack Reusable Produce Bags are better sellers, is because they are from a large company. These are just as good of bags, possibly better (the seams on them are really strong), and are almost the same price for three times more.
In short:
Pros:
* Environmentally, much, much better than plastic bags. If you don't have reusable bags yet, get some! Even if you aren't concerned about that they're actually really fun to have. :)
* Not noisy like a plastic bag
* You can have them on hand and never have to go searching for another plastic bag
* Fits basically all produce
* Very strong the sturdy
* Handy drawstring means you'll never have to use a twist-tie or struggle with a knot
* Produce can be washed IN the bag
* Some plastic bags may have harmful chemicals such as BPA in them. I'm not sure about these, but I very much doubt, judging by what they're made of, that they have BPA in them.
* Kids love usin' em
Cons:
* Not big enough for the very biggest produce
* Sometimes a little hard to see through
* Shouldn't store greens that go bad easily in these for too long
* TINY bit heavier than regular plastic bags. May add $.01 to total price at the most. Most likely won't add anything to price.

So there you have it: I think the pros FAR outweigh the cons, and if you compare them against plastic bags, these are far superior, and, as I said, the absolute BEST deal I could find on the whole internet. So what are you waiting for? :)

Proctor-Silex Rice Cooker and Steamer Review

Proctor-Silex Rice Cooker and Steamer

I have had this model for just over a year and it spontaneously died. This is the second rice maker to die after a short time, so the failure is the reason for 2 stars. While it WAS working, it cooked rice just fine. Ours came with a veggie steamer which worked well, just remember to put a little less water for the rice if you make rice along side it as the veggies will add water to the rice.
Aside from the failure this was a good rice maker, if it hadn't failed I'd have rated it 4 stars, because sometimes the cooker would switch spontaneously to warm mode before finishing cooking the rice.

KitchenAid Pro Food Chopper Review

KitchenAid Pro Food Chopper
Average Reviews:

This review applies to the White version of this unit, however except for color there are no other differences.
Expectation management is important when dealing with these mini-choppers. I have a Vidalia Chop Wizard which is perfect for large amounts of various vegetables, onions, etc. If you only need a small amount this food chopper is both convenient and useful. However you must limit the size of the food you are chopping to perhaps a one to one and one half inches in length and probably no more than about 3/4 of an inch in height. You must also pound the unit with some force to get it to really work effectively. I have carefully watched the Slap Chop infomercial ($27.95 with shipping and handling and an additional $7.95 S&H for the "Graty") and with camera angles that commercial creates a bit of a false sense of just what these products can and can't do. Several people have commented on how difficult this unit is to clean. The cleaning instructions on the box say "Remove container ring and carefully wash with soap and water." This has to be the most misleading and dumb instruction ever! The unit easily disassembles however the instructions on the box offer no assistance whatsoever.
What you need to do is first separate the food container from the unit by twisting the clear plastic container counterclockwise about one inch then pull down. This separates the food container from the cutting unit. Next depress the plunger approximately 3/4 of the way and then twist the sweeper/cover to the right or left pulling down until it separates from the remaining unit. This exposes the blades. You are now fully disassembled and ready to quickly clean and reassemble the unit.
The unit is dishwasher safe (top of DW only). You can use the unit with or without the base however with the base on the unit the food is all captured in the food container rather than on the cutting board.
From my observation this unit appears to be essentially a quality copy of the Pampered Chef chopper at about 1/2 the price. It uses a W wedge blade that rotates and also includes a scraper for the side of the food container unit so that the food doesn't build up on the side. This does not work perfectly but is a nice touch. With a litle practice and with the food size limitation mentioned above you can quickly learn the various techniques required for each of the foods you wish to chop. With a little more practice and some good camera angels who knows, you might end up doing a "Slap Chop" commercial for your friends only with a unit that costs less and works just as well. Just don't throw it over your back into the sink.
To recap, this is a very good mini chopper so long as your expectations are in line with the product's capabilities. However, KitchenAid needs to do better with their disassembly/cleaning instructions.

I am very impressed with this rice cooker. Many of the reviews for other brands were not very encouraging. I thought that Black and Decker has never let me down, so I gave it a shot. I measure exactly as directed on the instructions and the rice comes out perfect. I even substitute broth for the water and add my own blends of spices based on my cravings that particular evening. The cleanup is fantastic. I am going to buy one for my daughter and grandson this Christmas. We have used this cooker about 12 times now and the results are consistent. Please note the smaller size of this unit if you cook very large amounts of rice at one time.
** I have now owned this cooker for 7 months and am still amazed at how well it works. It remains so easy to clean up even after using it about 2-3 times per week. It has always produced perfect rice. And, that is even when I add lots of different items for a variety of rice dishes.

Average Reviews:

I've never owned a rice cooker before this, however, I have cooked lots of rice over the years. Its an inexpensive rice cooker and if you follow the directions, it'll do fine.
Since moving to the mountains of Colorado, its taken me years to adjust to the lowered the boiling point due to the higher elevation (8300')... it takes more time (add ~10-20min) and the dry climate means using more water (for a 1 cup of dry rice, takes ~2.5+ cups water rather than 2cups). Still, there have been many times when rice just didn't work out the way I wanted.
So I mentioned that it would be nice to have a rice cooker and let it deal with the cook time. Of course I had done some research, and when this came in the mail as a present, I was a little nervous since Oster's seem to get so-so reviews. Well, I cooked my typical basmati rice, a 1/2 cup dry and added my typical 1c water plus extra, put lid on, pressed the button and went to do something else.
A lot of reviewers mention how the rice on the bottom gets over-cooked, sometimes brown or burnt. Some reviewers like the crunchiness, some hate it. Well, the directions tell you to stir the rice - especially the bottom of the cooker after 15 minutes. Sure enough, the rice at the bottom was starting to stick. I scraped it all loose, added another 1/4 cup water, chopped it up a little, put the lid on, and let fate take its course. Would the rice by a burnt mess? 20 minutes later we had the best sticky rice we've ever had!
Plus it seemed to cook faster. And I really liked that it went to 'warm' mode automatically. One major drawback: It spewed hot sticky water up under the lid and through the vent all over the kitchen but once we wiped the lid off (without picking up the lid), it settled down. If you are a neat freak or want a set-and-forgot, this rice cooker is not for you. And for me, I'll come up with a little steam catcher helmet and deal with the mess. For the price, its a good buy. And, I love the red color too!
[found this cool tip from Spyce: To help keep the starch from bubbling up and spraying out of the vent hole, rinse the rice thoroughly and drain. Heat a small amount of olive oil in the rice bowl, once the oil is heated, carefully add the rice and saute it for 3 to 4 minutes. Add the water and continue cooking.] I'm going to try this tip next time!
BTW, this cooker seems like a knock-off of the similar Rival rice cooker (both owned by Jarden]

Several hours of my life were wasted pondering what rice cooker to purchase. A complete, healthy, fat-free meal can easily be prepared in this electric rice cooker. The nonstick removable inner pot produces up to 6 cups of cooked rice, while the steaming basket holds enough vegetables or shrimp for one or two hungry people. Simple to operate, the cooker features just one switch and two settings, cook and keep warm. During cooking, a red light is illuminated; when cooking is complete, the switch automatically reverts to the keep-warm setting and a yellow light comes on. Moisture and nutrients are sent back into the cooker by the domed glass lid, which also allows for easy viewing. After cooking, the rice should be allowed to sit for about five to seven minutes before removing the lid. Accessories include a measuring cup and a plastic rice paddle for stirring and serving the rice. The cup, paddle, pot, and steamer all should be washed by hand in hot, soapy water after each use. The rice cooker, including its stay-cool side loop handles, measures approximately 11-1/2 by 8-1/2 by 10 inches.

Starfrit 93209 Rotato Express - Electric Peeler Review

Starfrit 93209 Rotato Express - Electric Peeler
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Rotato Express, when it works, makes peeling potatoes and other veggies a breeze. It's especially great when making large batches of potatoes or turnips -- all that peeling can really be a hassle sometimes. The Rotato can turn a big job into a fast job and save you a lot of time in the kitchen. When it works.
The problem is, well, it doesn't always work. The build quality of this thing is cheaper than cheap. The blades pop loose easily because the plastic clips they're attached to are flimsy. Veggies with hard peels will constantly jerk the blades out. Even worse, the spring on the arm of my device popped loose after about two months of medium use. This renders the device useless unless you can manage to reinsert the spring (not an easy job).
At the cheap price, you could almost consider it a disposable item and just grab a new Rotato, but that's just too darn wasteful for such a big hunk of plastic.
If they delivered a better unit, even for $10-15 bucks more, I could heartily recommend this device for people who enjoy potatoes, turnips, or any other veggies that need a lot of peeling. As it is, it might be worth a look, but convenience comes with headaches.

Prepara Trio-Tri Blade Peeler Review

Prepara Trio-Tri Blade Peeler
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This peeler is easy to use and peels very well. At first I thought it was going to be impossible to clean, because it came without any instructions at all, and the method for removing the blade cartridge from the handle is not instantly obvious. However, you can do this, and even remove the blades from the blade cartridge and wash them separately. Because there are three blades that can retract into the handle, the handle is big (about 5" circumference, which makes a diameter of about 1.5" I think). This is good when you are using it, and less good when you are storing it.
The only reason I haven't given it 5 stars is that cleaning is still a bit of a pain. If you are peeling anything juicy (even, for example, carrots) the juice can get into the handle and so forth, so you have to clean up the whole thing inside and out each time you use it. When opposed to a normal peeler where you just have to wash one blade and a simple handle, it is a bit of extra work. Of course if you're putting it in the dishwasher it probably doesn't matter, but I'm in an apartment and my discwasher isn't entirely reliable, so I'm washing it by hand.
BTW, in case you are interested, here is the method for removing the blade cartridge from the handle. It will be easier if I explain how you change blades first. To position a blade for use, you turn the bottom of the handle until the picture of the blade you want is directly below the slide button. Then you slide the button toward the tip of the peeler to expose the blade. To change blades, you push the slide button back toward the end of the handle, turn the handle two "thunks" until the next blade is in position, and then push up the slide button. To REMOVE the cartridge with all three blades in it, you stop at the "thunk" in between two of the blades, and then push the slide button an extra bit further toward the end of the handle. (The button won't go all the way to the bottom unless you are between the blades.) Then the cartridge pops right out. It's not rocket science, but it's not obvious right away. In this case a picture (or rather a diagram) really would be worth a lot of words.

This is a good option for families that don't make too much rice at a time or do not want other functions like steaming veggies.
I have been using this for several months and I cant believe how easy it is to use. The rice comes out excellent each time. You do need to adjust the water recommendations to make the rice suit your likeing. I find that I needed more water with every type of rice...especialy long grained basmati which was downright dry at the top when I used the amt. suggested.
I have a problem with small kitchen appliances because i dont have a lot of storage room. Adding another appliance is always a tough decision. I find that I have been using this enough to warrent the purchase (several times a week). I had a larger unit that had more functions but I found I didn't use the *added functions* enough to make up for the space it took.
This is a great and fairly inexpensive option for people who don't need a huge amount of rice at a time, arent looking for duel functions and have limited space. Its not tiny...but its a reasonable size.

Average Reviews:

I purchased a case of Paldo Hot & Spicy Noodles from amazon and have had 4 bowls so far. I found them to be a decent, if slightly bland noodle.
Positives:
Price
spice slowly builds as you eat
not as salty as some other cheap noodles
noodles soften up better than some other brands
Negatives:
vegetables do not puff up and soften as well as the noodles
never achieves a level of hot that deserves the title "Hot & Spicy"
oil in the soup itself separates quickly if you eat the noodles slow, imparting a oily film in your mouth
Overall I found the Paldo noodles to be a nice change from the usually salty noodles you get at this price point, but was not impressed enough to buy them again.
