I ordered these for two reasons. One, I am a vegan and love my soy. Two, the first review (as something that is always made fun of because it's tasteless, I can't really see how it can taste bad). Why? Because I've tried the larger textured soy 3/4" and found them great. These can't be all that different except for size of the granule. And I was right, in that they have the same taste (basically no taste).
These come in the size that could best be described as akin to the bacon bits you would use for salad toppings. The first time I used these was in a tofu soup...just sprinkled them in. I did not prepare the tsp with any flavor, but again, as soy, they soaked up the flavor of my soup and added additional protein and fiber which is great.
You can eat these crispy (dry as is) or reconstituted (moistened wet). This product is actually quite versatile as you can do the following with it. Sprinkle on salad...sprinkle on rice (plain white rice, the tsp and some soy sauce), sprinkle on top of peanut butter you spread on bread to make them "crispy" pb, add to any soups or instant noodles and I would imagine, even making your own protein bars. I don't make much in terms of sweets myself, but just imagine you could do something like a crispy rice square treat, and mix these in. I'm sure you dessert experts can come up with something. Depending on how you prepare it, the tsp will remain crispy or if there is excess moisture, will become quite soft, which is ok with me either way.
7 grams of fiber and 22 grams of protein per serving, awesome. These should be added to "Subscribe and Save" so I can save some on it. :p
Right before I was going to publish my review of this product, I decided to see how it would taste as a cold breakfast addition. I sprinkled some with lightly sweet granola and soy milk and I can say that my granola will now always have an addition of some TSP.

Bob's Red Mill Organic TSP (Textured Soy Protein), 6-Ounce Bags (Pack of 4) Review

Average Reviews:

I love most Bob's Red Mill products and have been buying from them for 10+ years. However, this is my least favorite of their products. This stuff is easy to cook with, it's true, but it tastes like rubber, smells bad when it's cooking, and has no flavor until you add your own spices. I have no idea why I used to cook with this stuff so often other than that I didn't know much about cooking in HS and it looked "high protein" on the label. I recently read The Whole Soy Story by Kaayla Daniel (Amazon has it), and was amazed to learn that processed soy products like TSP are processed at high temperatures, denaturing the proteins and leaving in loads with antinutrients that damage the thyroid among many other health problems they cause. Although TSP appears to be almost all protein (like meat or tofu), in reality, you don't absorb much of the protein, anyway. While I am glad Bob's is using organic soybeans to make their TSP (thereby leaving out the pesticides and genetically engineered ingredients), the fact that it's "organic" doesn't make it a healthy or even a safe product. The dangerous antinutrients in soy are not a chemical additive or pesticide, they are in intrinsic part of the beans themselves, the plant's natural way of deterring pests. Traditional foods made from soy and eaten over the past 400+ years were slow cooked and fermented, destroying the antinutrients and leaving the protein, vitamins, and minerals intact. TSP is the total opposite of whole, healthy, fermented soy products like tempeh or miso soup, as it is not fermented and leaves in all the antinutrients. As a longtime vegan on a gluten-free diet because of food allergies, I'll continue to buy other Bob's products (they have an amazing gluten-free line), but I am saddened they are still making highly-processed, extremely unhealthy items like TSP.

TVP is the same base ingredient used for Morningstar "Crumbles" and Boca "Ground Beef" substitute. The difference? Pure TVP doesn't have the HUGE amount of added sodium in the aforementioned products (check the labels), plus it is cheaper. Also, you don't have to freeze this product, and it will last a long time if stored properly. All you have to do is rehydrate it and use it. It takes on the flavor of whatever you are cooking and adds welcome protein to the meal. For our household, this is a staple product.

This is s tasty product sold at a moderate price. But it contains trans fat, hydogenated oils and high levels of sodium. It has three percent total fat and no cholesterol .It is also manufactured on equipment that was used to process eggs, tree nuts and peanuts. It is flavored with "natural flavorings" which is a little uninformative for people trying to follow a vegan or vegetarian diet.It comes in a very sturdy container that has a shelf life of over twenty years. No where on the container was there any information whether or not this was a vegan or vegetarian product.Nor was there any information on whether or not genetically modified soy beans were used.I love the taste of this product and would continue to use it if not for the transfats and doubts on whether it is a vegan product. It is great with rice or pasta. It would make an excellent emergency or survival food for an omnivore .

I was quite disappointed with this product. The company shipped it promptly and I could hardly wait to try it out. I have tried it in gravy and soup and neither has made me think remotely of chicken. I have cooked with plain TVP in granules and larger chunks before so I knew I would not be getting "chicken" but the chewiness of larger TVP chunks was missing in these smaller bits and I felt the flavor did not enhance the foods it was added to.
There are trans fats in it, also, making it not a healthy option for vegetarian eating, either.
The chickeny flavor of this product reminds me of the flavor of crackers that claim to be chicken flavored. If you like those you might like this.

I've looked everywhere online for the original TVP that I used to buy from ADM's country store in Decatur, IL. In these folks, I finally found it. They're courteous, very friendly and are just good people. They ship quickly and package in ways that make sense. ie: I bought 25lbs. They shipped in 5-5lb. bags instead of one 25lb. bag. I won't be buying from anyone else and I use a lot of this product as I'm primarily vegetarian. If I could give it 10 stars, I would!

I love these TVP chunks as a veggie substitute in recipes that call for chicken. It is great in "chicken" curries, casserole, and creamy soups and stews. Although TVP is normally really boring, these chunks have a great texture and seems to have a really good taste in sauce-rich recipes. They are slightly more chewy than minced TVP, which makes your recipe more interesting. My meat-eating friends don't seem to spot that this is veggie food, so I suppose that is a plus for entertaining ... :-)
These chunks reconstitute really quickly (about 10 minutes) in water or cooking sauce. So this is a very easy ingredient to use. The chunks provide good value and a tasty addition for veggie cooking.

I had been searching for a healthy low-sodium stock cube that I could use for my one-year-old son's meals. Everything I could find was full of chemicals and/or high salt. (I boycott Whole Foods after getting severe food poisoning from their food during my pregnancy and discovering that the management could not care less about their customers, but that's another story...).
These stock cubes were a real find - they taste great, are healthy, low sodium, and you can use them in an amazing array of meals. Perfect for flavoring a soup, rice/paella/risotto, stew or even a stir fry. Bonus: you will save money buying them here!

I have been searching for a TVP product for a while now and when I saw Bob's Red Mill TVP on the net I looked for it at Amazon and there it was. I hadn't used it in years, so it was a new learning experience and I got an acceptable burger on my first try, but not quite what I was looking for. With a lot more research on the net I discovered that a mixture of TVP and Vital Wheat Gluten, also from Bob's Red Mill and available at Amazon, will give you a much meatier burger. There are several websites that can help you, one is Vegan Dad, which can give you a recipe that will help you find a better burger that isn't so mushy as TVP can be, also check out Thrifty Living. If you are trying TVP for the first time, don't give up on it. Go out to You Tube and type in TVP burger recipes and see what you can find. Also check out Everyday Dish on You Tube. It is a learning experience for sure.
