VillaWare V200 Food Strainer Review

VillaWare V200 Food Strainer
Average Reviews:

In the summer, during strawberry season, I had borrowed one of these terrific machines from a friend at work. He had all of the attachments, so I was able to use the berry screen. I washed the berries, but left the hulls on to see what it would do. Well, I got perfect results when it hulled and de-seeded 9 quarts of strawberries in less than 1/2 hour. The cleanup wasn't much of a challenge when weighed against the amount of work and mess I would have made without it.
I made wonderful strawberry jelly with the juice and pulp, that I still get mention of when I see the people I gave some to. I had to get this machine so I can repeat last year's success without having to borrow my friend's machine again.

IPAC Italy Stainless Steel Potato Ricer / Masher Review

IPAC Italy Stainless Steel Potato Ricer / Masher
Average Reviews:

This ricer is basically junk, due to the very poor quality of metal the top handle is made from (the one you push down on to rice the potatoes). Everything but that handle is very nice, heavy-duty stainless steel. However, when you apply any force to the upper handle (which is made from either very lightweight SS or aluminum), is bends easily, rendering the utensil useless.

KitchenAid Professional Cheese/Food Mill Review

KitchenAid Professional Cheese/Food Mill
Average Reviews:

Bought one of these in my search for a good cheese grater to replace my sadly inadequate KitchenAid KG301 rotary model (see reviews on this before buying...they capture the problems well). After using this once, you have to ask: "what were they thinking?" The cutting disks can fit into the device both ways though only one way cuts, the disk is difficult to line up properly in the unit, and frankly doesn't cut well with my main use for parmigiano reggiano...it almost powders it. Worse, the circular hand motion needed to grate is fine for, say, a pepper mill for which only a small amount is needed. For this, the repetitive twisting and small yield are unacceptable.
For those of you like me who have and love the superb and unbeaten KitchenAid stand mixers, this device and the rotary grater are not in anywhere near the same quality and usefulness league.
Another cheese grater of no value to me.

Norpro "The Original" Sauce Master Review

Norpro The Original Sauce Master
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm wondering why it never occurred to anyone else to simply put a 9x13 under their sauce master to collect the sauce. I use one of my baking pans and it holds plenty of strawberry puree for jam. It pours well into a measuring cup without a mess. So no, there isn't a problem with design here.
Also, my sister in law has another company's similar product and complains that in making sauces her's splatters off the screen very badly. Mine is perfectly clean as the sauce guard catches all of it. There is at times a problem with the discard backing up and falling into the sauce but it only happens when my children are running the machine and not paying attention. An adult should have no problem getting it to work without incident.

Velox Tomato Press / Tomato Strainer - Made in Italy Review

Velox Tomato Press / Tomato Strainer - Made in Italy
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this tomato press to replace a similar one I got years ago which finally just wore out. Be aware that the actual color of the press is RED not the white as in the photo. The square bowl that comes with this particular press is handy for catching the offloaded tomato remnants. A comment about these type of presses making only "tomato soup" which is sort of true, the pressed tomato stuff that comes out of the chute is sort of soup-like but makes a great base for spaghetti sauce, salsa, and pizza sauce. I usually add a can of tomato paste to thicken the sauce up. Secondly I saw one reviewer's comments about the left over tomato stuff being a waste, well, I learned years ago to just keep putting that material back in the hopper and re-pressing it. I recently did about 10 pounds of tomatoes from my garden and got 4 huge containers of sauce with only seeds, a stem or three, and bits of skin left over. My wife was amazed at how little is left after you keep re-pressing.
The only down side to these presses is the squisher part which is inside is tough to clean. All in all though a great way to make a sauce base for the money and a great use of my garden tomatoes.

Norpro Sauce Master Food Strainer Review

Didn't buy this off Amazon, I had it at a local store. A friend told me that she bought one since they have numerous apple trees in their yard. She makes applesauce and said that it worked wonders for her. I bought and made applesauce the next day. It took me a total of 20 minutes to cut, cook and make 1 1/4 quarts of applesauce (it was about 1/2 a plastic grocery bag of apples). I nearly cried. The seeds, core, stem and peel all come out from the open end while the applesauce shoots down the slide. My 3 year old even helped turn the crank for it. Now I can do lots of applesauce in a very short amount of time. My friend has also riced potatoes (for making lefsa) and did 2 large pots in about 5 minutes.
One thing I do know is that you need to clean the screen as soon as possible. The mesh is not stainless steel and will rust if not cleaned and dried off as soon as you are done using it. Other than that, I can't say enough about this product! Definitely a must have if you make your own baby food (which we do), applesauce, jams, salsas, pumpkin puree and just about anything else that you may can. LOVE IT!

Electric Food Mill Review

Electric Food Mill
Average Reviews:

This does a great job of converting small to medium quantities of food into a consistency that is perfect for our 6 month old daughter. We had used the hand crank thing but that was a pain. This is also preferable to a blender because when preparing smaller quantities as the results are more uniform and there is less lost to the equipment.
My only reservation was the comment about the lack of an on/off switch. I was about to run to the hardware store (quick as a bunny) and buy one to add to the line cord. However my wife, no stranger to a kitchen, pointed out that this food mill works just like... a food mill. It only goes on when you place the motor housing on top of the container *and* press down. That is the on/off switch. Adding something else would only make the thing more difficult to operate than it needs to be. In fact, we leave the motor housing plugged in all the time. When it's our daughter's dinner time we fill the container with stuff, set the housing on top of the container, and press down. A few seconds later we have a nourishing and freshly made meal for her. (We usually make a little extra and add it to our dog's food because she likes it too.)
As we go through our parenting journey we are learning there are certain essentials and this, ioho, is one of them.

Basic product is good but this is an industrial size version and so quite unsuitable for standard home use.

The Paderno World Cuisine 5 quart tin food mill is used to strain or purée fruits and vegetables. By placing cooked fruits or vegetables in the mill and turning the crank, the semi-circular blade oversweeps, compresses and scrapes food. The bar that straddles the container applies constant pressure against the cutting plate and crushes the food, while retaining seeds, skin, and fibers. The food mill comes with three cutting plates allowing for a variety of textures. These interchangeable cutting plates have perorations of either 1/16", 3/32" or 5/32" (1.5 mm, 2.5 mm or 4 mm). This food mill\'s output is approximately 3 lbs. per minute and fits on any 7" or larger receptacle.

I replaced my original 35 year old Foley Mill with the new model. On the plus side, it is greatly improved by the fact it is now made in stainless stain. On the minus side, the handle is no longer solid but rather an "open" handle and I find it now difficult to hold. If the new handle would not be a problem for anyone else, than I would give it 5 stars.

just used the "back to basics 220 strainer" and the results were wonderful
the machine is well built, and the instructions were made designed the way you could follow them easily. most products i buy, the instructions do not have empathy for the user who must assemble and use the product.
it worked great on the tomatoes. the seeds, peels and core came out the "discard end" and the pure "pulp juice" came out the front. i processed 200 tomatoes without a problem. bang for the buck, you can't beat the production this machine will give you the tomato season

Oxo Good Grips Potato Ricer Review

Oxo Good Grips Potato Ricer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For starters, this gadget succeeds at doing the job for which it was designed better than just about any other kitchen tool I have tried except for a very sharp large kitchen knife.
And, it has all the features which have made OXO Good Grips products the best selling and best reviewed line of kitchen gear.
I held out buying one of these little darlings for a long time, as I already owned a food mill which is entirely capable of doing the same job with about the same level of success. And, this 18/10 stainless steel gem is not the cheapest gizmo in the gadget drawer.
I was swayed from this alternative by the fact that a food mill is a pain in the neck to retrieve from its high shelf, assemble, and then clean, although if I am cooking for a crowd, I may still use it, as it can do much more spud crushing in a shorter time than the Ricer.
I was also deterred by the possible lack of 'multi-tasking' ability until I saw TV chefs sqeeze water out of cooked spinach and lots of other leafy goodness.
My last basis for procastination is the fact that I thought the design with a selection of different hole plates (very much like the food mill) would be a better option to OXO's 'unibody' construction. But, I gave in here too, since I couldn't locate a good model with this feature.
Well, now I have this one and I used it and it produces truly primo mashed potatoes WITHOUT creating gummy spud paste.
If you make mashed potates more than once a month, buy this beauty!

This is a solid well-made product with holes in the mill inserts that are larger (5mm and 3mm) than the size of the seeds you want to keep out of your sauces. I primarily use a food mill for tomato sauces. This device will not work with tomatoes or seeds noticeably bigger(grapes). Unless you are pureeing watermelon you probably will be disappointed in this product.

I tried the mill right after it arrived. To be honest the scraper is worthless. It's easier to use a spatula and more effective. The grind seem fine enough and I like the ease of assembly. Now the real proving ground to me will be in the longevity of sharpness and how well it works for other projects, but for the money I was a little disappointed.
