Fagor 9 Piece Pressure Canning Set Review

Fagor 9 Piece Pressure Canning Set

Pressure canned apple butter, in pints and half pints, using the Duo 10-quart pressure cooker/canner and very satisfied with its performance. The spring-style pressure mechanism is very quiet compared to the rocker style, and the psychological effect is less like a rocket launch and more like using ordinary cookware. The solid-bottomed 18/10 stainless steel has a beautiful, mirror-like finish and is compatible with induction range tops (Fagor manufactures induction ranges). The pressure slide did hang up one time, and the cooker wouldn't pressurize, but with persistence the slide goes in with a little wiggling. The 10-quart Duo holds four pint or five half-pint jars on the slightly undersized canning rack - a reasonable load for the home canner. The stainless steel ladle and funnel look great and are almost as solid as the cooker. The stainless steel funnel can be submersed in boiling water, and although that's not really necessary with pressure canning, why not kill bacteria when you can? The magnetic lid lifter is a great tool if you are boiling the lids, also not necessary except for water bath canning, but if you're rinsing the funnel in boiling water, why not throw in the lids for good measure? Haven't used the jar wrench because you only tighten lids finger tight when pressure canning. The bubble freer is a useful tool and the jar lifter is a must -- it's great to get all the tools as a set. As a pressure cooker, the Fagor Duo 10-quart can handle anything you can throw into it. Brown a pot roast, throw in two cans of mushroom soup, a packet of onion soup, a cup of water, pressurize and an hour later you have a pot roast with fabulous sauce. Vegetables should go in later or above the roast in the optional steamer insert to avoid turning them into mush. The manual is well written and the DVD features a couple of professional chefs who do a terrific job of showing how easy it is to pressure cook various dishes, including grains and cheesecake. The video hosts are charming and natural, and the DVD gets five stars for taking the fear and mystery out of pressure cooking.

Mirro Foley 2-Quart Stainless Steel Food Mill Review

I replaced my original 35 year old Foley Mill with the new model. On the plus side, it is greatly improved by the fact it is now made in stainless stain. On the minus side, the handle is no longer solid but rather an "open" handle and I find it now difficult to hold. If the new handle would not be a problem for anyone else, than I would give it 5 stars.

All-American 15-1/2-Quart Pressure Cooker/Canner Review

All-American 15-1/2-Quart Pressure Cooker/Canner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When I first ordered this canner, I wasn't sure if I would be able to maintain a steady pressure with my "pulsating" flat-top stove. With the thick aluminum walls, I have no problems at all. In fact, with such thick walls, I can put the burner on "high" and it will slowly build up pressure so I don't have to stand over the stove and constantly monitor as the pressure increases. Once at pressure, it is very easy to maintain the required pressure without having to constantly vent off excess pressure. The owner's manual recommends one to four jiggles per minute. It takes longer for this canner to cool down than others due to the thick walls. I factor this in to my processing time. It will maintain it's pressure (15 psi) for almost another 10 minutes with the burner off. This canner is designed to fit 7 quart jars perfectly. If your looking for a canner, this is it!

Norpro Stainless Steel Deluxe Food Mill Review

This is a solid well-made product with holes in the mill inserts that are larger (5mm and 3mm) than the size of the seeds you want to keep out of your sauces. I primarily use a food mill for tomato sauces. This device will not work with tomatoes or seeds noticeably bigger(grapes). Unless you are pureeing watermelon you probably will be disappointed in this product.

Back to Basics 286 5-Piece Home Canning Kit Review

Back to Basics 286 5-Piece Home Canning Kit
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am brand new at canning, and did my first batch prior to ordering these tools. It went okay, but I was immediately sold on the idea of a jar lifter. I looked and looked locally but couldn't find one, and this set was available for immediate shipment.
The jar lifter is fantastic, and ultimately I think it alone is worth the price of admission -- not because it's worth it in and of itself, but because it's a total necessity, so I would have purchased it at any price that wouldn't break the bank.
The other pieces are either already part of a moderately well-equipped kitchen, are nice but not necessary, and/or are not all that well constructed.
I'd opted to return a relatively expensive set of plastic funnels when I purchased this set, but the included funnel here melted a bit under the heat of the boiling brine I poured over the pickles-to-be. Same for the plastic surrounding the magnet when I used it (quite effectively) to grab the jar lids out of a simmer sauce pan. The lid wrench I'm just not sure I see a use for, since jars aren't supposed to be super tight and they tend to loosen when cooled anyway (or am I misunderstanding what this is for?), and the tongs, well, who doesn't have tongs?
Anyway, in researching for this review, I've come to feel like something of an idiot, because the pieces are available separately and eligible for the free shipping promotion of your choice. Unless you don't already have a funnel, or don't mind the possibility of plastic in your canned food, I recommend saving five bucks and just getting these two pieces:
Back to Basics 284 Jar Lifter
Back to Basics 174 Magnetic Lid Lifter
If you need more than those two pieces, though, this set will do the job.

Capture summer fruits and vegetables at their prime for enjoyment throughout the year by canning at home. This five-piece canning kit provides all the essential tools needed for getting started--a jar lifter, a magnetic lid lifter, a canning funnel, a jar-lid wrench, and kitchen tongs. To safely remove the hot jars and lids after they've been sterilized in boiling water, use the jar lifter to pick up the jars and the magnetic lid lifter to easily remove the lids--with no risk of burned fingers. The canning funnel directs ingredients into the jar quickly and cleanly and offers a wide design that accommodates both regular and wide-mouth jars. Heat-resistant handles and durable steel construction makes the kitchen tongs a convenient addition to the tool set. And when it's time to enjoy those tomatoes or fruit preserves, the jar-lid wrench effortlessly removes the sticky lid. When not in use, the tools can be stored in their original box, which measures 8 by 6 by 12 inches. The home-canning kit carries a one-year limited warranty.

Kuchenprofi 18/10 Stainless Steel Jam Funnel Review

Kuchenprofi 18/10 Stainless Steel Jam Funnel
Average Reviews:

This Kuchenprofi 18/10 Stainless Steel Jam Funnel is well made, and it seems would be excellent for its purpose.
However, it has a smaller opening than I thought. It is a "jam" funnel, whatever that means, but I assumed it was a standard funnel. This funnel has a 1 1/4" bottom opening and is too small for my purposes. However, we are keeping it because it is good quality and may be useful later.

Progressive International Collapsible Canning Funnel, Green Review

I love this collapsable funnel. I am a kitchen gadget junkie and in the scheme of things, this is hardly a high tech gadget but it gets the job done exactly as I needed. The best part is that when I am done it collapses into a much smaller package so that it is easily stored in the drawer. As a bonus, it also offers a piece that fits onto the bottom which serves to strain whatever is being funneled. Perhaps it made note of this on the description but I missed it so this was a nice surprise.

Roma Food/Veg Strainer Review

Roma Food/Veg Strainer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have used this Roma Vegetable Strainer for making apple sauce twice. Previously I have used the Victorio strainer (very nice and sturdy, but no longer available) and Back to Basics (stronger than the Roma in my opinion, but not as good as the Victorio - it had a lot of parts to lose and was not rust resistant). The Roma is easy to put together and seems to be rust resistant, but is weak, flimsy, unstable, and doesn't hold on my counter well with either the suction or the clamp.Things I like about the Roma Strainer:
* Pieces attach easily without nuts and bolts
* Seem to be rust resistant (The Back-to-Basics strainer that I bought 15 years ago had some parts that would rust)
* Plastic cone that takes the waste (seeds, core and skin) away is farther from the sauce dispenser, making it easier to have various shapes of bowls.Things I dislike about the Roma Strainer:
* The suction cup does not hold on my smooth quartz counter-top. Nice try, but it doesn't work.
* I have a bull-nose (rounded edge) to my counter-top so the clasp doesn't work very well either - it isn't long enough to reach around the bull-nose. So, it starts wiggling fairly quickly and isn't very stable, with no way to attach it more firmly.
* The handle is much harder to turn than the old Victorio (purchased 30 years ago) or Back-to-basics (purchased 16 years ago) strainers I have previously used. As I turn the handle, the vertical support seems to wobble or bend a bit, as though it isn't very strong.
* The handle seems a bit flimsy.
* Turning the handle is stiffer with more resistance than with the other strainers I have used before. (You tire more quickly.
* I have to run the waste product through 2 x as there is a lot of good applesauce that goes out with it.
The materials and workmanship are poorer quality. Some of the features (fewer parts to get lost) are nicer. Overall, though, my experience is that it is not nearly as good or as easy to use as the other strainers I have used in the past.

Mirro Foley 3.5-Quart Stainless Steel Food Mill Review

Mirro Foley 3.5-Quart Stainless Steel Food Mill
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this food mill because it's the same design as the food mill my grandmother has had for decades. I've been using it the past few weeks to make tomato gazpacho. This food mill is more than up to the task.
The stainless steel surface is easy to keep clean, and it disassembles for even easier cleaning. As a nice touch, the diameter of the scraper wire on the bottom of the mill is just a fraction smaller than the grill holes, which means that if you have seeds lodged in any of the holes after cleaning, you can use the scraper wire to knock them out.
The only reason why I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 5 is because the double-loop handle can be uncomfortable to hold after a while. (I can understand why they used the double-loop design--because it stays cooler if you're milling over a heated pot--but I think I would've preferred having a more comfortable handle and using a potholder if necessary.)

RSVP rotary VEGETABLE applesauce FOOD MILL ricer Review

RSVP rotary VEGETABLE applesauce FOOD MILL ricer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The RSVP food mill is an economical and efficient means to pureeing food such as tomatoes, potatoes, and fruit. I started not to get this because it's plastic and history has shown that for me, most of those items wind up in the trash. However, after looking at the prices on the other brands and reading a review somewhere about another plastic food mill that's very similar to this one, I decided to get it.
Even though it's plastic, it's pretty durable and can sit on top of a hot pot. Some may not like it because the feet are not adjustable, but there are enough notches on the legs to accommodate a variety of pot or bowl sizes. It's obviously not intended for huge pots or mixing bowls. I use it over a pot that's about 8" across the top.
The mill comes with 3 stainless steel blades. The description says 18/10. The blades are sturdy and fit snugly in the bowl. The handle has to be pressed into the notches on the side of the bowl using a bit of force, but it doesn't require anything more than a little effort.
The food mill is 2.5 quarts, which is enough for my needs. I cut up and cooked about 6 medium sized red potatoes, drained them and put them all into the food mill. It was a little to full, but after a few turns that problem was solved. I used the coarse blade and processed all of the potatoes in a few minutes. Since I didn't peel the potatoes, I had to scrape the blade off once to move the peel out of the way. The mill did a great job, and I was satisfied with the results.

Three interchangeable 18/10 stainless steel disks (fine, medium and coarse) fit in the sturdy, hygienic plastic bowl. The long, comfortable handle and substantial pot rests hold the mill steady when in use. Fits over bowls or pots 6.25" to 10.25" in diameter. Dishwasher-safe on the top rack.
