(More customer reviews)The first batch of alfalfa sprouts produced great. It does take rinsing at least twice a day. The next go, I used a mix of sprouts I got from a health food store. By the second day, the sprouts were starting to mildew. I threw that out and started over. By day two, again the sprouts were starting to mildew. I have low humidity in my house so I can't figure the problem. Rinsing twice a day is all I can manage because I work away from home. I rinsed real good and left the sprouts uncovered. So far so good, but this system isn't perfect, needs more supervision than I can offer it.

(More customer reviews)This is a pretty solid sprouting system. There are 3 trays, and they allow you to grow a pretty good variety of different sprout mixes at the same time. It's stackable so it doesn't take up alot of space, and it is very easy to grow sprouts. Some of the sprouts my kids aren't big on, but I can't sprout enough lentils! They pick them clean as a snack. I am guessing that's a good thing. :^)

Maybe you don't have fruit flies in your house. Maybe you do, like me. Personally I have not been freaked out too much by this, but I did cut some squares of cheese cloth to put under the lids. So I'm back to cheese cloth. So what did I buy these for? Well, I didn't know about the fruit fly issue. Nobody told me. So now you know.

Hydrofarm Seedling Heat Mat Review

(More customer reviews)We are home gardeners and have tried many ways to provide bottom-heat for vegetable seed germination -- atop my always-on docked laptop was the most effective but the space was tiny. We bought a 20" x 20" heat mat and now have the right tool for the job. We set it up on a card table and found that it was not providing sufficient heat to the soil in the trays above. After an overnight on the mat, the soil surface was less than 10 degrees above ambient temperature. The room where the seeds are was 60 degrees overnight, and the soil surface in the trays was 68 degrees -- certainly not good enough for eggplant germination. I used an infrared thermometer (Raytek Minitemp MT6 here on Amazon) to check all temps. The exposed mat surface (no tray on top) was 82 degrees. I felt the surface on the underside of the card able and it was definitely warm, indicating heat loss downward. I wanted all of the heat to go up into the soil, so I cut a piece of rigid-foam insulation just slightly larger than the heat mat (22" x 22") and put it under the mat. Within 15 minutes the exposed surface of the mat was at 97 degrees and when I moved a tray to measure the temp of the mat beneath a tray, it was at 115 degrees. 2 hours later, the soil surface temperature was at 85 degrees. I am now confident the soil will get enough heat for proper germination, and I will begin using the heat mat thermostat to regulate soil temps based on the particular seeds we're starting (search the Web for "vegetable seed germination temperatures" to find one of the many reference charts available). We can also regulate temperature by covering or uncovering the trays to change the rate of evaporative cooling. We are well aware that covered soil is more prone to damping off/seedling death, which we now control with a spray of strong-brewed chamomile tea.

This is a great alternative for me. Just remember to run water through it twice a day. (My brother recommends 3/4 trayful of water with 1 tablespoon vinegar, followed by 3/4 trayful of plain water (don't forget to empty the bottom water tray), to supress undesired things such as mold; this is working great and the seeds are sprouting fine.) For seeds I'm using "zesty sprouting mix" from NOW foods.

The trays stack up nicely and I have six of them, one on top of the other. They require little space. Believe it or not, it's like having a small farm in the house that produces an impressive amount and array of "fresh vegatables", albeit in sprout form. The sprouts grown in these trays stay fresh and never develop an unpleasant smell. They taste crisp, are pleasant to eat and have become the mainstay in my daily intake of vegetables in my diet. I clean my trays outside with a spray nozzle attached to my garden hose. This makes cleaning quick and easy, then I rinse them in the sink with some bleach in the water to sterilize them before growing a fresh crop. The trays are foolproof and have changed the way I eat. With the price of vegetables rising in the supermarkets, I've found these trays to be a great money saver - to say nothing of the superior nutrition that eating sprouts provide. I would highly recommend them to anyone!

(More customer reviews)I've found that Onion Sprouts are one of the fussiest to grow....no matter Who's seed you buy...mainly because they take AT LEAST two weeks to reach proper eating size...as well as they tend to hold onto the seed hull but its not going to hurt you to eat them.
I normally soak for about 6-8 hours then drain. What I DON'T do is always rinse them every day...it really depends on how much moisture I still see in the sprouter..if I see beads of moisture I might skip a day. Then the next day I will give them a 5 or 10 minute soak instead of a quick rinse.
The flavor of them is worth the time and effort.
