Male fruit (with small blossom scar) is milder and has fewer seeds -none?- than Female fruit (larger blossom scar). Peeled, cut into long 1-inch thich 'fries', dry-wet-dry breaded with white/yellow corn meal-milk/eggwash-white/yellow corn meal, and then 'deep' fried will change the mind of the most stubborn vegetable hater! The 'other' Italian Green Eggplant (also called Cucuzzi sometimes) is in fact the 'Trombisno' (Trombone) Squash. Younger fruit are similar, but older fruit will twist and turn; often even looping back upon themselves! The trobisino's flesh is firmer and milder (not as flavorful).

Purple Passion Asparagus, Bundles of 25 roots!Put alittle Passion in your gardening! This gorgeous and tasty asparagus has taken Europe by storm! This is the creme de la creme of the gourmet asparagus world. Chefs say this is the best tasting asparagus to be found on any continent. The purple spears should be picked when young, 6-8 tall while buds are still tight. Female spears tend to be thinner (pencil thickness) and not quite as tender as the slightly more robust males which are best when ? inch thick.. The foliage of this perennial vegetable will grow 4-6 feet . When planting, space the roots 18 inches apart in the garden after chance of heavy frost. When cooked, the sweet tender spears turn green. I purchased 4th of July from Hirt's Garden the past 2 years and both times the plants arrived with black spots on their leaves. No way was I putting them in and spreading whatever they had to my other plants. The first year I thought was just a fluke, but after last year, no more. I was able to order from Burpee this year instead, and from now on. I will just order them earlier when they have them in stock

(More customer reviews)I saw some of the other reviews for Hirts that complained about the germination rate. I bought several Hirts exotic vegetable packets and I have had 100% germination so far. Plants are still small.
I ordered and the seed packets arrived promptly. Interestingly, they arrived in ziploc bags that were really small and only had a few seeds. I love the ziploc baggies! It is so convenient and compact that I am amazed that no one else had sold me seeds this way (not Burpees, HOme Depot, or 15 other suppliers I have used).
I planted the seeds within a month. They were planted indoors in a seed starter tray with the compressed peat moss cylinders that expand with water (less than 10 dollars a tray, multiple suppliers). Because they gave me so few seeds per package I only planted a single seed per peat moss puck and had 100% GERMINATION. Still staggered by this. I never get 100%. Interestingly, I planted about 300 plants from multiple suppliers and the Hirts sprouted first as well. Maybe just lucky but these seeds must have been fresh. Will repost at end of season and advise on the actual cucumbers.

(More customer reviews)This plant is also known as Beetberry and seemed an interesting little plant to try because you could use the leaves as spinach salad leaves and the berries in the salad or eaten raw. It's very rare apparently and I've found out why!
The entire first package I bought never germinated. Normally the first batch of any new seed I try I sow some in a pot, and some in two or three places about the garden to see how well they'd catch on in different spots. Nothing happened. I thought maybe I'd got a bad batch so I trawled the Internet for ages trying to find another seller with this seed. I finally found one and ordered another set. I tried again and although some seeds of this new batch did germinate, they only lived a few days before they keeled over and died.
Now I consider myself to have a pretty green thumb, and can usually make things grow when others can't, so...APPROACH WITH CAUTION! I won't say to stay away completely because it's always good to try new plants, and growing conditions are so subjective that maybe it'll work for you even though it didn't for me.

(More customer reviews)I'd never tasted or even seen this type of tomato before but I decided to risk it and have a go at growing them even though I wasn't sure they'd grow in tropical Trinidad (some fruits/veg need a cold spell to grow well and we are pretty much around 32 degrees celsius all year round). They were very easy to germinate and grew well. I grew them in a large trough-type container, and the plants grew to about four feet tall. They are a bit lanky and do require staking or caging especially if you live in a windy area otherwise they will be blown over. I planted basil in with them to help keep away pests but I was still troubled by one pest - stinkbugs! I had to continually pick them off the stems of the plants but this is not unusual as I read that they are attracted to tomato plants. Luckily they didn't get a chance to do any damage to the plants or fruit because I got to them in time. Constant vigilance!
The tomatoes are very cute and look just like the photo. Because they are cherry tomatoes, they are small enough to pop in your mouth whole. I meant them for salads but I can't resist just eating them for a snack. None have made it into a salad yet! They turned out very sweet although I am not sure if that is their natural inclination or because I added baking soda to the soil from time to time. I read that the baking soda reduces acidity in tomatoes.
I highly recommend trying these!
