(More customer reviews)I've been cooking for over 15 years (I'm not that old), and I grew up in a Chinese family. A Chinese Chef knife is exactly that, it is not a cleaver, despite the resemblance. This is the one knife a Chinese chef will use in the kitchen for just about everything.
Trust me, I've tried cleavers, they are not a replacement for a real Chinese Chef knife. I've also used many of the Chinese Chef knives that you can pick up in many Chinatown shops and Asian specialty shops. (BTW, I'm from the largest Chinese community outside of Asia, so we are not lacking the "goods").
The Shun classic....is amazing. It is perfectly weighted, and the grip is fantastic. I can grip the knife with confidence even when wet or dealing with meats.
The blade is the sharpest I've used of _any_ Chinese Chef knife. The first time I used it, I was mystified why it took so much effort to cut (it was supposed to be sharp, wasn't it?). The reason was, I had already sliced through everything without noticing and was already pressing on the cutting board!
One problem is that it also cuts into my cutting board with relative ease. If I don't remove the blade straight up, I hear a sound which makes me think the thin edge is being knicked. However, so far, no real problem, the edge is still perfect.
I have still been a bit wary to use it to hack at bones, but I think that fear will go away. (When I say Chinese chef's use it for everything, I mean everything).
I don't care about a Damascus steel look, but I can attest that the surface has no problems with releasing food. Slides off easily.

Remember, you get two kits! Each kit is a total of 6 different decal pieces (3 pieces mirrored left and right), with the largest piece measuring about 6.5 by 3 inches. Overall length on the sheet is 7 inches but the kit can be shortened or lengthened by changing the spacing of the pieces. You can use some of the kit, all of the kit, or even use the 2 kits to overlap. The great thing with this kit is it is up to you. Oil Dispenser With Measuring Tube Review

baster thingy - attractive.
Cons - be careful! I lifted mine up by the neck and the neck came OFF!
It is NOT securely attached to the base (pear shaped part). Oil
went everywhere as it fell to the floor. BUT I was determined,
washed it all and CRAZY GLUED the neck (baster holder part)
to the base (pear shaped part). I recommend that you don't ever
lift it by the neck! What a horrible mess that was - and
very unexpected as I thought the unit was all one piece - it is
not. Oh, yeah, don't expect the baster to hold all the oil
well until it gets to your salad - plenty of "drip potential"
there so always move whatever you are moving the liquid to right
TO the oil dispenser! Do NOT put this item near your oven or
range or anything that an accidental drip from the baster or heat
would melt the dispenser/fire hazard. Hard to clean as oil
naturally would be from plastic. I do not know if dishwasher
safe / does not feel like it...?
Tip: Do not fill it up all the way up to the neck. If you do the
baster part gets all oily (or whatever is in the base). Only
fill it to the fill line.
Conclusion - TERRIFIC item. Just a few cautions / but works great and
the measuring part is a MUST. DO BUY THIS - you won't
be sorry at all...just be cautious with it in all ways.
I AM very happy with mine / even if I have crazy glued the
neck to the base - its a keeper! I expect tupperware
or equivalent to come out with an improved $-ier version.
Until then, try this. Carefully.

Cuisipro Apple Corer Review

(More customer reviews)I bought the Cuisipro Apple Corer because my 3 year old loves apples, but refuses to eat them sliced, and it's almost impossible to remove an apple core without hacking up the entire apple.
It works perfectly. The serrated edge (at the tip) allows you to easily puncture the apple, and a quick twist allows you to pull the entire core out. The corer opens, letting the core drop out--no digging it out with a pen or other instrument.
Also, there's a 25 year warranty offered by Cuisipro--takes 30 seconds to fill out a form online and you are set in case of breakage or other problems.
The price is a little high for just an apple core, however, it is well crafted, not flimsy metal. You don't have to worry about breaking/bending this on a hard Granny Smith. Well worth the price, in my opinion.

Microplane 40020 Grater/Zester Review

(More customer reviews)I purchased this after spending 2 hours zesting limes for a gourmet cookie recipe with the traditional potato-peeler+ food processor method. The most time consuming part is carefully scraping way all the white pith on the inside of the peel. The pith is very bitter and can ruin your recipe. This zester did the same job in 30 seconds and didn't even touch the pith. Just pure, perfect lime zest with no effort. Totally worth its weight in gold. Now I can make those cookies again without my hands cramping up after hours scraping the peels. Who has time for that?
I've also started using it for grating parmesan. Definately takes Ceaser salads and pasta up a notch. I'm purchasing several more as gifts for my friends. Would make an incredible (and cheap) holiday/birthday gift for anyone, even the casual cook. Please note that the size of the grated zest or cheese is very fine and not ideal as a garnish. Parmesan or Romano grated with this tool melts quickly into the pasta, and doesn't lend much to the presentation. Tastes great, but hard to see. If you're looking for a garnishing tool, this is not it.

Seki Magoroku Series 6-3/4-Inch Nakiri Knife Review

(More customer reviews)If you are looking for a nimble knife to help you do fine mincing and vegetable work... this is a terrific option. Like most of the Kai/ Shun knives I own, this has a D shaped handle (sorry, it's for right handers), but this one is also "single" sided blade, making the blade extraordinarily precise.
Construction is more than likely a "rat-tail" style tang than the fully forged tang of their "Damascus steel" style knives, which is why this is about $40 or so less than the some of the other knives. Still a well constructed knife, will be more blade heavy.
The blade itself is really quite thick for this style of knife, making a fairly substantial heft, considering the style. It is my preference to use a slightly heavier blade (I'm a big guy). Beautifully forged and polished, the back of the blade is smooth and the edges rounded, so makes "choking up" on the blade far more comfortable than some.
This knife does one thing... it minces and slices (mostly) vegetables and beautifully. This cannot take on the skins of Hard Winter Squashes... this is not a "rough service blade" like a Federick Dick Chefs knife. This can certainly do lovely cuts on fillets for sushi and chicken pieces, but this isn't a bone or a butcher knife.
Keep up the blade with a Fiskars Roll Sharp, don't EVER put any knife in a dishwasher... and you should probably never have a problem with this knife.

(More customer reviews)My steamer basket must be going on 20 years of age, looks like new. It has outlived the gift of a plug-in steamer that was the size of a food processor and awkward to clean (regifted that). It nestles in 2 quart or larger saucepans or Dutch ovens, with its trademark overlapping folding "petals" adjusting for the size of the pan. The stainless surface makes it reasonably easy to maintain. When using it to steam starchy vegetables like potatoes, I recommend coating it with vegetable spray to make clean-up less of a chore. The only thing better is the flat bottomed steamer insert that came with my Revere Ware saucepans. This, however, takes up much less storage space than any alternative.
Things others may not like: 1) The awkward thing about it is that moment of truth when you need to get the vegetables up and out of the steam pot into the serving dish. You kind of pinch the center pole with a potholder, make sure the sides are up at least a little, then spill the contents into the dish. Or you transfer the contents with tongs. 2) The legs are no more than an inch long, so the water level for steaming must be kept low. 3) This has not happened to mine but I have encountered many broken (and thus useless) baskets with missing petals or collapsed legs in hard-used beach cottages. 4) The petals sometimes catch on scrubbies or dishcloths when being washed, a fleeting annoyance. 5) It fits awkwardly in the dishwasher and I believe washing it at the sink contributes to longevity.

(More customer reviews)I've avoided making salads for a long time because of the preparation time. I had an older salad spinner, but it was the kind you had to turn, and cleaning it afterwards always seemed to take a long time. This spinner is a huge improvement over any I've used before.
You put the rinsed greens in the strainer, or rinse them after they're in, and then put the strainer in the bowl. One easy push and it spins on its own and it does not move around at all on the counter. I have found that it takes a couple spins to dry them the way I like, but while the greens are spinning, you can be chopping up other salad ingredients.
Even better, you can lock the handle in the "down" position and use this spinner to store the unused greens in the fridge; no separate "lettuce saver" is needed. I've had leaf lettuce in mine for several days, and it is still crisp and fresh. Since buying this remarkable spinner, I've had salad every night. And enjoyed every minute of it, preparation included!
If you love salads but hate the prep, get this. You will wonder how you ever got along without it.

(More customer reviews)Legs and center handle never really attached securely. I like the collapsing style so it fits in nearly all of my pots and pans and is easy to store. After a year or two of moderate use the individual wings began to come loose and it was noticeably scratching some of my dishes. It's a simple contraption that meets a simple need and produces delicious and nutritious food but I'm not going to get this particular style of steaming basket again.
You should own a steaming basket if you cook your own food. You could do worse, you could do better.

(More customer reviews)As far as expandable steamers go, this one is the best, as far as I'm concerned. The 3 folding legs are rounded, so you can use this steamer in a non-stick coated pot, without worrying about scratching it. The center post handle screws off, if it gets in the way when steaming certain foods, like fish. I also like how you can put a fork through the top portion of the handle (as the instructions suggest), in order to lift it out of a pot, without burning any fingers in the process. Although it's a little bit more work cleaning it, as opposed to a silicone steamer (that doesn't expand), I usually use it for vegetables, and use a silicone steamer for fish (easier to clean). If you're really into steaming your foods, get this one and a silicone.
