Oxo Good Grips Apple Corer and Divider Review

Oxo Good Grips Apple Corer and Divider

I recently needed to cut a mountain of apples for a party. I knew that not all apple dividers were created equal and I wanted to have the best one. So I went out and bought three different ones to test before the big day. I wasn't crazy about the OXO's looks (I preferred the sleek stainless steel model I found for triple the price at Williams Sonoma), but in terms of utility--and honestly what other criterion should an apple divider be rated on?--the OXO divider was hands down the best. It slices the apple into 8 slices rather than 12. The fact that it cuts fewer slices makes the divider easier to use. Also the center hole for the core was just slightly larger than on the other two models I tried and that made it so that I needed to do fewer touchups with the knife on the OXO sliced apples. Also, the greater ease of cutting made it easier to cut straight slices, rather than wavy, uneven ones. The rubber handles are good because if you must cut a lot of apples rather than just one, the slipperiness of the juice can become an issue.

Victorinox 47508 3-1/4-Inch Paring Knife Review

This knife was bought out of jar on the counter of the Robertson's Meats main store in OK. I got it as a whim needing to cut a summer sausage in the car. What a surprise...it has been great and I have bought 3 more.
What is the best thing in a knife is how long it keeps it's edge and how well it sharpens. This knife beats any other brand in this category. Yes the handle is simple and small.
No other knife let's me slice a block of hard cheese paper thin without much thinking about it and other's always drift. The beauty is in the thin blade...it is not flimsy...thinness of the blade is what makes the knife and yet it is durable.

The small size and sharp point of this paring knife make it ideal for handheld and small cutting chores, such as vegetable peeling or mincing herbs. An obligatory kitchen addition, this knife carries its weight mostly in its comfortable polypropylene handle, which allows you greater control. R.H. Forschner knives are made by Victorinox with the same quality as their Swiss Army knives. The handle of this paring knife is slightly larger at 4.25-inches, than other Victorinox paring knives. Like other cutlery in the line, this 3-1/4-inch paring knife is stamped from high-carbon steel that won\'t stain. A special tempering process is used to produce an edge that can be resharpened over and over again, so the knife can keep its original sharpness. This item carries a lifetime warranty against manufacturer\'s defects. Hand-washing is recommended.

Zyliss 12040 Jumbo Garlic Press with Cleaner Review

Zyliss 12040 Jumbo Garlic Press with Cleaner

I have been using this garlic press for over two years now and consider it to be the best press I have ever used! The well for the garlic is very large, accommodating more than one garlic clove at a time. When only pressing one or two cloves, you don't really have to peal the cloves, the pressing action does it for you! A little more hand pressure is required when pressing more than two cloves at a time. Cleanup is a breeze with hot soapy water.

A kitchen essential, this jumbo-size garlic press makes it easy to cook with fresh garlic. The unit can accommodate several cloves at a time, with a clever design that eliminates the need for peeling prior to pressing. Simply place unpeeled cloves into the oversized hopper and firmly squeeze the ergonomic handles together. The press instantly removes the peelings and extracts the garlic bits and juice through its mesh shield, creating a fine dice that would have otherwise required several steps with a knife and cutting board. Best of all, its included cleaning tool sports tiny teeth that fit perfectly into the pressing surface, removing all traces of garlic fragments in one smooth move. Use the handy tool to add fresh garlic to authentic Italian dishes, delicious homemade breads, savory soups, and more. The dishwasher-safe garlic press measures approximately 11-8/9 by 1-2/3 by 4-2/3 inches and carries a five-year limited warranty.

Kuhn Rikon Epicurean Garlic Press Review

Kuhn Rikon Epicurean Garlic Press
Average Reviews:

Since I own both this Kuhn Rikon and the Rosle garlic presses, I have posted this comparison on the Rosle reviews, as well:
There's no doubt that the Rosle is extremely good--in fact, I would have given it five stars just a few weeks ago. But then I purchased the Kuhn Rikon Epicurean Garlic Press (#2315), after reading a recent review of it in Cook's Illustrated. After repeatedly comparing the two side-by-side, the Kuhn is unquestionably the better press. It was also about $8 cheaper here on Amazon, but that doesn't seem to be the case any longer--in any event, I didn't consider price for this review.
What's strange is that the crushing mechanisms on both presses appear to be identical. In fact, prior to crushing with the Kuhn, I felt disappointed when I received it, convinced that I had just bought the same garlic press twice. However, for whatever reason (and it remains a mystery to me), the Kuhn's crushing of garlic is clearly superior in two ways: 1) It produces a more beautifully consistent mince of the garlic, whereas the result from the Rosle seems more "smashed" by comparison. The difference isn't subtle--I was honestly shocked by it. 2) The pressing is more complete, with less left behind in the hopper, and it presses unpeeled garlic better, as well. (That said, I get a much better press from either unit with peeled cloves.)
Ergonomically, the shape of the Kuhn also handles better, although I never had a problem with the Rosle. And I'd say both units have stainless steel construction of equally high quality. For me, it was the crushing performance and not the handling that has sadly relegated my Rosle to the drawer, since I now always reach first for the Kuhn.

This handsome, all stainless-steel garlic press makes quick, efficient work of pressing garlic or ginger. Place even unpeeled garlic cloves inside and get the pressed garlic you want. Designed to fit comfortably into the palm of the hand, it has been engineered to require far less effort to use than other presses. Cleaning is easier than ever since the sieve hinges out to flush clean under water. The press can also be washed in this dishwasher. A solid, basic tool for any kitchen, the garlic press makes a great gift.

J.A. Henckels International 3-Piece Paring Knife Set, Multicolored Review

J.A. Henckels International 3-Piece Paring Knife Set, Multicolored

Several years ago I bought the 4-pack set of these knives, manufactured by Zwilling-Henckels. I was so happy with them I bought some for others in my family. We use them almost daily, so I wanted to get another set. While looking around on the site, I noticed this 3-piece set which cost 1/2 as much as the 4-piece! What a deal I thought! The only knife missing was the red-handled one, which I use the least anyway. Unfortunately, I forgot to do my homework. Yes, these ARE Henckels knives but NOT the same Henckels knives I have and love. Henckels has two lines, the "premium" brand and the "value for the money" brand. The first set of knives I bought was the "premium" brand and this set from Henckels, International, is the "value for the money" brand. These knives are very similar to the first set I bought but they are not the same. The handles are slightly different, the blades are different sizes, the knives aren't as sharp, and I have already noticed some small rust stains on the blades, though I was able to scrub them off. These knives are ok for the price, but they aren't as good as the set from Zwilling-Henckels, which I would have given 5 stars.
09/14/09 Here it is, 5 years later, and I'm thinking of buying another set of Henckels paring knives. I will buy the Henckels Twingrip set of 4 rather than these, in spite of the higher price. (If you knew me, that fact would astound you!) If you are confused by the similar names for the two sets of knives, see if you can find a close-up picture. The better quality knives have two little 'men' on the blade, as opposed to one 'man' on the lower quality merchandise.
If you are wondering why I would consider buying yet another set of paring knives, it is for this reason: I find myself washing the dirty, yellow H. Twingrip knife over and over rather than reaching for my clean, yellow H. International blade!

I finally decided it was time to have a vegie brush and I chose this one for the design. I was glad I did. It fits great in my hand and doesn't slip and slide around. It works wonderfully for cleaning potatoes..especially if you like the skin in your mashed potatoes like I do!

Chef'n Palm Brush, Avocado Review

This Chef'n Palm Brush is a pretty good brush. Its brush hair is tougher than soft toothbrush hair and softer than brass/steel wire brush. I would say the toughness of its brush hair is on par with a brand new medium to hard tooth brush. It works well on most vegetables. I have tried it on potatoes, okra, butternut squashes, celeries, and mushrooms... It seems to do a pretty good job, except the mushrooms and celeries. Its brush hair is too hard for the mushrooms. Cleaning celery proves to be slightly challenging because of the curvature surface of the celery. It can effectively clean the convex surface, but not the concave surface due to its short hair. I presume a brush with softer and longer hair will do a better job at cleaning the mushrooms and celeries, but it will not be as effectively for potatoes, for example. Ultimately, the Palm Brush strikes a good balance, though not perfect for all vegetables. It is best for flatter and harder surfaces. Think of it as a soft scrubber or hard toothbrush.
As for the unique ring design, I have mix feelings about it. When using the ring alone, I found the palm brush wobbles as I brush. Afterall, it is be a single point contact. For a small job, it is much easier to just clinch the entire brush with my hand and start scrubbing. It is more secure and provides greater force. On the other hand, clinching the palm brush for extensive period of time makes one's hand tired. Wearing the ring is more ergonomic, and you can brush through many more vegetables this way -- even if it wobbles a bit. By the way, I have seen people wear this in either direction -- with the "chef'n" logo reading right side up or upside down. One will put the brush under your palm and the other will put it under your fingers.
As for the price, it is more expensive comparing to other veggie brushes on the market.
