Oyama CFS-B12U All Stainless Rice Cooker Review

(More customer reviews)I LOVE rice and just wanted a reliable, quality appliance to make it for me while I worked or did other things. So after sifting through hundreds of non-stick crappy cookers, leaking and exploding cookers, and the countless bad reviews, I finally came across the Oyama stainless rice cooker. I ended up purchasing it on Bonton.com because it was on sale for $49, but their customer service is absolutely wretched, and I would go back and spend the extra $20 here at Amazon for quicker shipping and better service (not mention, Amazon won't triple-bill you for one order and take over a week to put the money back in your account).
PROS:
* Easy to clean. Ridiculously easy to clean. I tend to get eczema on my hands when I wash them frequently, so I appreciate that I don't have to use a bunch of soap and scrub the pot to get it clean.
* Cooks white rice, brown rice, short grain, long grain, blah blah...I've used many types in the cooker and they never burn. I add about 1/2 cup more water than the instructions say because I like my rice more moist and sticky.
* Keeps the rice warm and moist for a long time after it's done cooking. I tested this for a 24 period and their little booklet was right...the rice was fine.
* I love the stainless steamer insert tray. When the rice is done, I put frozen organic veggies in the steamer tray, close the lid, and come back in 5-10 minutes and everything's ready to eat.
* No spills or leaks or crappy, cheap parts.
* Fits on the counter really well.
* I really love that everything is stainless inside, because I know nothing is going to leach into my food.
CONS:
* I can't think of any, actually. I'm really happy with this unit and I hope it lasts a long time!

(More customer reviews)This is a well-made, versatile, attractive, almost-"professional" set which, if you look around for sales, offers a good deal for the money (mine was from Macey's, special $39.95).
Although the bottom unit is heavy enough to function nicely as an independant 3 qt. stockpot, the top unit should definitely not be used over direct heat (my only complaint). And I think the well-made glass lid is always a plus over a solid one.
The upper unit and steamer both have 2 qt. capacities. This size is about right for all "double boiling" or for steamimng moderate amounts of food, but might be a little small if you want to steam vegetables, etc. for more than 2 to 3 people on a regular basis.

(More customer reviews)This steamer fits perfectly on Cuisinart's 4 Qt saucepan. The lid seals in every bit of steam. I used to always have to add more water when steaming batches of corn-on-the-cob, but since no steam escapes here, I can make several batches non-stop. I also like the fact that the steamer is wide; that means that the food will cook evenly (instead of other steamers where the stuff at the bottom gets overcooked and the stuff at the very top gets undercooked). I've only used the steamer five or six times but so far, there's practically no sign of dullness or staining - maybe just a little sign of dullness, but I'm more interested in function than appearance. Washing it immediately will keep it stain-free. Overall, an incredible deal for $20.00!

(More customer reviews)I love this steamer! Had a similar style years ago made by Farberware, but it was just too small. This will hold a large head of broccoli and some carrots with ample room for more. Unlike cheap folding steamer inserts it is easy to get the steamed vegetables out once they have cooked. Just use pot holders, grab it from the sides and dump. No fishing around for the little ring underneath the hot food. I wish they had made it with little handles on the sides, but I am still thrilled with the product. Another benefit I appreciate when I forget to set the timer: the glass lid allows me to monitor the color and doneness without taking off the lid. It has graduated sides so that it will fit over different sized pans. I use it with the 2 quart saucepan. The quality of this line is amazing. All-Clad has a worthy competitor that wins hands down, in my opinion!

(More customer reviews)I bought this to replace an older smaller pasta cooker. I have about 20 pieces of the Cuisinart Multiclad Pro cookware but couldn't justify spending over $100 for a large stockpot. The only notable difference is that the Multiclad has the sandwiched aluminum all the way up the sides of the pot. Not really necessary I thought for something I would use mostly for boiling water. Besides, the heat source is only really from below and that extra multiclad surface only adds to the weight.
I love the shiney exterior and the large capacity compared to my previous pasta pot. The steamer insert is a nice little extra but I'm not sure I'd want to haul out this enormous pot just to steam a few veggies. The lid is more domed than Cuisinart's standard lids and has a more sculpted handle. Cleanup is easy but only if you have a very large sink. The handles on both the pot and insert are solid and appear to be very securely attached.
So what's not to like?
This pot was a lot bigger than I anticipated. So large in fact that it doesn't fit in my normal cookware drawer. I ended up having to divide the pot from the insert just so it would fit in the cabinets. And that domed lid just adds to the height. The insert didn't need to stick out of the pot as far as it does and the handles on the insert come out further than those on the pot itself. Where the pot will barely fit, the insert won't just because of the handles. The other problem with the height of this pot comes when you try to use it on your stove. I nearly have to stick my head under the fan hood to see inside it!
The inside of both the pasta insert and the steamer basket won't drain completely. There are no drain holes along the bottom outer edges so the water continues to drip after removing it from the pot whenever it's tilted. I'm also not sure why they made the outsides of the insert and steam basket so shiny but made the insides brushed. This is almost the opposite of their fry pans. A shiny smooth inside would have made cleanup easier without the use of Teflon.
It would have received 5 stars except for these minor issues.

(More customer reviews)The description given for this item isn't specific to this pan, it's just general hoo-hah about how wonderful the construction is in this line of cookware.
It doesn't actually tell you that this is just the insert. You put this on top of a separately obtained 2, 3 or 4 quart Cuisinart saucepan which has the water in it.
I don't consider this a fault of the product or an attempt to fool you into buying something that's incomplete. It's just one of those annoying missing facts. Why did they leave this information out? Many other steamers come with the bottom pot as well as the steamer insert.
Maybe I'm an idiot, and it's obvious to everyone else. But I hope this will help you if you're looking at it and scratching your head.

(More customer reviews)We recently ordered this steamer and were pleasantly surprised at how well constructed it was and how well it works. Both the pot and steamer insert are heavier weight than comparable steamers, and appear to be as durable as they are attractive. The copper bottom heats up quickly and evenly, and the knob on the lid does not get too hot to handle. It can steam enough vegetables for 3-4 people. Make sure you read the label and soak the copper bottom 20 min. in baking soda solution before use to remove its protective coating.
