I purchased the insert after continuing to read that steamed vegetables retained more of their vitamins and minerals. I did not want to go the bamboo steamer route, as I was afraid the wood could harbor bacteria. This product is now a must have in my kitchen. I have summarized my observations of this product below:
Pros:
1.Allows me to retrain more vitamins and minerals in the vegetables I feed my family
2.Easy to clean
3.Fits well in four or five of my Calphalon pots
4.Easy to store since it does fit inside other pots
5.Handles stay cool
6.Glass on lid is extremely thick
7.Glass lid fits snuggly which keeps steam from escaping
8.Large enough to steam a pound of haricot vert at one time
9.Excellent for making dim sum (steamed dumplings)
10.Reheats chicken breasts without drying them out
11.Can be used to refresh slightly stale bread
Cons:

Overall I highly recommend this product to anyone that owns Calphalon or Calphalon One products.

(More customer reviews)It's a cheap, nice little rice cooker that just works. Here are some tips from the instruction manual:
1. This appliance is NOT dishwasher safe. Inner pot and accessories are NOT dishwasher safe. (i.e. that stuck-on rice that happens to every rice cooker at some point? yeah, don't try using your dishwasher to get it out.)
2. Always make sure the outside of the inner pot is dry prior to use. If inner cooking pot is returned when wet, it may damage this product, causing it to malfunction.
Also, interestingly, it's pretty much a disposable appliance unfortunately. That is, for the fifteen bucks you buy it for here on Amazon (esp. if you have Prime shipping for free), if it breaks, you can return it to the manufacturer, but Aroma Housewares Company [...] for shipping and handling charges.
I also find one other instruction particularly interesting: "Do not use the appliance for other than its intended use." Take that, Jack Bauer.

(More customer reviews)We had out-grown our old steamer and were looking for a larger one for our family. This more than exceeded my expectations. It is large. A single level is almost as big as the old steamer. I thought I would have to use all three to exceed my previous capacity. Another plus is the shape. The circular design of some steamers is limiting. Putting in fillets or things like asparagus is easier to arrange now. I think the asparagus actually turns out better since it's in the center of the dish and not around the edges conforming to the shape of a circular container. Also, the oblong shape allows more efficient use of space to arrange items like fillets, thus more fits. There is also more surface area on the bottom. While the volume of some steamers may be large, a lot of this volume is consumed vertically. The design of this tray has more surface area along the bottom and is not as deep compared to other steamer trays boasting the same capacity.
Steamed foods turn out fine in the automatic modes as well as manual. I find myself sticking mainly to manual, since there are lots of variables the preset programs can't account for like personal preference on 'doneness', quantity - which can affect circulation, type of food which a handful of presets cannot possibly prepare to everyone's personal preference, etc.
PROS: Lots of steam- fast. Easy to read display. Easy to use functions. Nice to have a water refill port that can be accessed while in use as well as easy to clean after use. Nesting feature of the trays is a great space-saver.
CONS: One major drawback, the manual setting cannot be used with a delay. The presets are cute, but unnecessary. Event the manual itself recommends varying times from the recommended preset times to conform to your preferences. I'd trade all of those presets to be able to use the delay feature with button eight - the manual mode. Did it take extra effort to not allow a delay feature with one out of the eight modes? Seriously.
Great product with one key item for improvement. If you want more capacity than your typical steamer, this has it and is up to the task of steaming all those levels.

I found that it is very small, even with both tiers and takes a long time to steam the vegetables when compared to the other steamer we had (which did contain BPA). So I guess that is the trade off but I'm going to continue to look for a better, faster model.

Good Points:
-it's inexpensive
-the electronic timer works really well (this was the new upgrade from previous models)
-it's versatile especially for Asian cooking
-it works really fast
Bad Points:
- MOLD the steamer's water inlet, that also serves to help you measure how much water is in the steamer, is a great way to collect mold. Currently it is nearly impossible to dry this inlet completely without pushing a qtip or tissue through, and no turning it upside down doesn't help since the inlet's curves are designed to keep water in - which is really stupid.
Oster should spend more time testing their products. This should have been fixed before being released.

(More customer reviews)When some friends gave this little steamer to my husband & me almost 10 years ago, we thought it was a dumb idea! "What do you need a whole separate appliance like this for?" we laughed. After all, we assured each other, we had a complete set of pots & pans, running water, etc. We thought this was just a silly affectation. We were wrong. We finally decided to use the steamer when our friends were coming to dinner, cooked some broccoli in it and....had our revelation. That night the broccoli was crisp, bright green & "al dente" after 12 minutes of steaming. In other words, "perfect." So was the asparagus we steamed the next night, the rice we steamed the night after that, and so on.
1001 nights later, having used this handy little appliance almost each & every night, we finally had to admit that we'd been wrong, completely wrong, totally wrong! This is no affectation! Not only did our vegetables, rice, couscous, etc. come out perfectly every time, steaming preserved their nutrients & this little steamer was incredibly easy & convenient to use. I've even used it to sterilize my younger child's bottles & to steam foreign stamps off envelopes for my son's collection. The only small appliance we all use more frequently is our electric kettle! This steamer's compact size, however, makes it easy to store & all of its plastic bowls/covers/baskets fit easily in the diswasher for easy after-dinner clean-up. After nearly 10 years it still works as well as it did that first night!
You need this steamer. You may not realize it till after you've owned it for a bit, but if you don't find yourself discovering multiple uses for it, well, your imagination is lacking!

If it was BPA free it would be 5 stars all the way for me. If you dont care about the #7 plastic than this is a very nice steamer. I for one tossed mine, because of the plastic. So now I am on the hunt for a new steamer.

Wash the veggies, sprinkle seasonings over them and place in the microwave for a couple minutes. Let steam til desired tenderness (approx 3 minutes for me) and then serve. Fabulous every time. Easy to clean.
Also, this is great for making rice. Recommend to eveyone.

(More customer reviews)I saw this steamer in an ad in Runner's World and just had to have it. Since going on the South Beach Diet, I've upped my intake of eggs, fish, chicken, and vegetables tremendously. And because I live an extremely active lifestyle, I never have time to wait for things to thaw before cooking. I was defrosting frozen meat and nuking scrambled eggs and frozen vegetables in the microwave everyday when I did some reading and found out that microwaving destroys over 90% of the healthy vitamins and nutrients in foods. Researchers have found that steaming is the best way to preserve nutrients if you have to cook a food.
This steamer gets the job done better than I'd ever hoped. While it does take a little longer to cook with steam than in the microwave or on the stovetop (add 5-15 minutes of cook time), it is a more hassle-free way to prepare food. You don't have to constantly check your food to see if its burning or stir it. No more exploding eggs in the microwave or rice stuck to the bottom of the pan. Just load it up, set the timer, and leave it to cook. For example, I stuck a couple of frozen chicken breasts and a cup of brown rice in, set for 45 minutes, and left to do something else. Halfway through I poured in frozen vegetables and seasoned the chicken and rice. The chicken cooked through perfectly, the vegetables were tender, and the rice was perfect. Hard boiled eggs are easy too.
Clean up afterwards was a breeze. The plastic containers are easy to wash off, but the drip pan fills up quickly and when full is hard to get to the sink to pour out without spilling. Cooking directions and times are approximate, so there is some trial and error involved. But since I love it so far, I will definitely be using it several times a week and get lots of practice. I highly recommend.

I hope this is not a recurring problem. I looked at many reviews of many products and noted that this was a problem on some of the machines which had fancier delay-start timers. (More customer reviews)I've used the Black & Decker steamers every other day for 14 years. They last about 7 years of heavy usage. Unfortunately, I tried my new one with a new design. How do I get water into the little spout, it's really tough. I asked my wife and she said, no big deal, then proceeded to spill water all over the place and had to mop the water up. Why go backward in a design? And the the water tray was empty before I did a minimum amount of rice. That's never happened before on my older model, even for double the amount of rice. Do I have to stand and watch it now? I have to work and watching a steamer steam is not cost effective and boring. The instructions say I can add more rice to the cup, but it doesn't tell me the time. The timing is different than my old one so do I have to guess the time? I never use the flavor scent so I toss it immediately. I can't on the new one since the basket won't fit if removed. There were two nice finger holds under the older version to easily lift the entire unit. They disappeared and I can't get my fat fingers under the unit now. How am I supposed to pick it up? The plastic steamer basket is really flimsy now. I don't think it's going to last 7 years of every other day usage this time. The clear plastic unit is flimsy as well.It did the steaming ok, but I burned myself trying to get the unit to the sink and the top off. If you have a perfect design, why go backward? That's why very popular car companies stick with the design that works and only modify slightly with improvements. They don't leave cup holders out of the new models and forget to include power stearing.
I've purchased many of these units for friends over the years and highly recommend them. What happened?
