(More customer reviews)I've used cages in the past. However, every year when the plants reached maturity we would get a heavy thunder storm with high winds and it would knock some of them over. The cages would collapse, be bent up and I would end up replacing some of them. This spring I bought the Tomato Stake. I had to wait until summer to write a review because I wanted to see how the held up. My mature plants, heavy with fruit held up to a powerful storm. I highly recommend the Tomato Stake. The built in rubber coated ties make it easy to keep up with plant growth too.

(More customer reviews)Bought 3 pack. One came broken. The remaining two appear to be working for now, but I don't believe it will last more than a season or two. As the two prior reviewers said, you need to supply your own stake. This is my first year trying out tomatoes, so time will tell on the sturdiness and how it handles weight!

(More customer reviews)I bought four spiral stands for my tomatoes last year because I hate staking plants, and hate the metal cages. I was pleased with how compact they are when disassembled, making them easy to store during the winter. They are very easy to assemble- I had them ready to go in mere minutes. After growing season, they were just as easy to take apart and pack away. The spiral stand is sturdy, and I can tell that I will use it for may years to come.
The spiral stand supports tomato, pepper, and other plants as they grow, without ties that can damage plant stems and without rusting. After installing the spiral stand and planting, the spiral shape of the stand trains plants as they grow, so that there is no need to rearrange plants for optimal growth later. It is the most easy and effective plant stand device I have ever used.
My neighbors admired the unique look of the spiral stand. Although the spiral stand is a new visual element in the garden, it does not look out of place. In fact, it has a very organic quality to it that makes the garden more appealing to the senses than stakes or rusty metal cages ever could.
The best part about the spiral stand is that it increased the number and size of my tomatoes. I didn't plan to do a side-by-side comparison, but I had an extra tomato plant, so I planted it alongside the plants in the four spiral stands. I did the old wooden stake and tie routine with this extra plant, and it did not grow as large or bountiful with fruit as my spiral stand plants grew. I recommend the spiral stand to both novice and advanced gardeners.

Ultomato Tom Cage Review

(More customer reviews)This is the world's best tomato cage, hands down. As another reviewer stated, if you've forgotten to stake or cage your tomatos, you can snap this one around an existing tomato without doing any damage to the plant. Try that with a wire cage! I also like that the side arms are movable so you can adjust it to support different branches (like if one is heavily laden with fruit, etc).
It is VERY sturdy. I have had wire cages burst open somehow due to the weight of the plant and this Poly cage won't. The stakes also are pretty tough to bend. (I once tried pounding a stake into a slab of cement hidden under the soil and only after several hits with the hammer did I notice any bending in the pole.)
You may be a little put off with a price of $5 when you can buy slightly smaller wire cages for $1, but it's well worth it. You can reuse for years without any noticable changes, it stores flat, unlike wire cages that take up a lot of space and rust, and if you are growing something larger than your average tomato, you can combine two or more sets of stakes to create a hexagon. It's also taller than your average cyclone type wire cage which is great for indeterminate tomato types.
I purchased one at Home Depot 3 years ago and was so impressed that I went out and bought 3 more (one for my sister, two more for me!) I also use it to stake cucumbers, and this year will try to trelis mini pumpkins with it. Honestly, if you make the move to the Ultomato cage, you will be thrilled with your results and revel in the day you throw away your rusty and bent wire cages.
