This product is basically a large rice/grain, vegetable, and meat cooker. It took me a little while to figure out what to use it for, and the manual wasn't much help. The main unit of the cooker is a big, non-stick pot. It comes with a steaming tray that fits inside the main unit. The product also includes a lid, measuring cup, serving paddle, plastic base, and a digital control unit that plugs into the wall.
Here is how it works. To begin, you pan fry whatever needs fried, such as meat. There are a variety of temperature settings, from warm (180 degrees) to sear (close to 500 degrees). After the frying is done, you add water, rice, and whatever other ingredients you need for the recipe. Then you set the unit to cook the mix. There are "brown rice," "other rice," and "steam" settings.
My wife and I decided to test the unit by making a barley and ground turkey goulash dish she found online. We started by frying the ground turkey, which cooked quickly and evenly. We then added water, onions, tomato paste, garlic, barley, and spices, chose the "brown rice" setting (the closest approximation to barley), and in no time we had a delicious meal. I was very impressed with the results, so we tried another dish. For this dish, we began by cooking brown rice, millet, and amaranth in the main unit, and then we placed flounder and vegetables in the steam tray, which sat atop the cooking grains. Everything turned out great! The fish was moist and evenly cooked, and the grains and vegetables were cooked perfectly. Both meals cooked pretty quickly, and cleaning the unit was easy.
My wife and I had the following concerns about this product:
- The manual is not very helpful. It contains no recipes or practical cooking tips. Initially, we were even a little confused about what the cooker actually did. We managed to find one demonstration video online, but otherwise, we ended up using recipes meant for rice cookers made by other companies.
- The main unit gets pretty hot. I wouldn't recommend touching the outside of it while it is cooking!
- Even though there is a timer on the control unit, it doesn't seem to function while cooking rice. It just says "on." The unit knows when to stop, but we had no idea when our dinner would be ready. The timer can be set on "steam" mode.
- I have health concerns about the non-stick coating. Dupont is phasing out the use of PFOA (the problematic chemical in Teflon and similar products), but I couldn't find any information about the coating used in George Foreman products. I called customer service, and asked if the coating contained PFOA. The representative couldn't find the answer and said someone *might* call me back, but if not, to call them back. I felt blown off, but if I get an answer, I'll update the review.
Overall, this is a nice rice and grain cooker, that will help busy people prepare convenient, healthy, quick, and delicious meals. The possibility of PFOA residue in the non-stick coating will limit our regular use of the product, but we will still use it.
